Wood has now a well- ; established kennel of Scalyhams at Mairehau. She tells me that two ol her Sealyhani brood bitches. Opili Columbine and Opihi Coquette, have just none back to the Opihi Kennels fair]ie. to be mated to the great winning stud dog, Dcganwy Hex (imp.) the properly of Mr F. G. Saville With the increasing popularity of tin Sealyhani. Mrs Wood will have in. diiTieulty in disposing of the- progeny, which are bred from some of the besi ', stock in New Zealand. Mrs 1.,. Pressor, of the Llangennj Kennels, St. Martins, informs - me thai ' she has disposed of a promising Alsa- , tian puppy to Mr L. Evans, of Huntsj bury Hill. This puppy is sired bj i Flash of Lorraine, the dam being Empress of Llangcnny, and it should dc well for its .new owner. Miss N. J. Turner, of Christehurch , has recently secured a very nice Cain j dog puppy from Mrs P. Simon, ol ! Hoon Hay. The youngster is by the ' winning dog, Rosemoyne Rambler i from Sadie of Seeone, and was bree [ by Mrs S. H. Britten, of Christehurch j The recently imported Cairn Terrici i biieh, Earlswood Tesus, the property ! of Mr R. Conn, has presented hci | owner with a splendid litter of fom i healthy puppies. They are sired by | Mr Conn's imported Earlswood Jock and the future of these puppies will be closely watched, as this is the first litter, and both sire and dam are bred from champions in England. Mr R. Conn is very pleased with a litter of five puppies whelped by his Scottish Terrier bitch, Musselburgh Joan, at the Musselburgh Kennels, Richmond. They arc in perfect health and very typical. I Mr F. G. Saville, of Fairlie, hat I lately been busy with shows and also j disposing of puppies. From the last | litter whelped by his winning bitch, I Queen of Sheba (imp.*, and sired by I Deganwy Rex (impJ. three dog puppies have found new owners; one, a beautiful all-white specimen, has gone to Miss Marion Crow, Dunedin, one to Mr Lance Raymond, Mataura Island, and a third to Mr Lindsay Gordon, of Hastings. It is worthy of note that while Mr Gordon was recently in Australia he visited many kennels in search of a really first-class Sealyham for stud purposes, but could not rind his ideal until he returned to New Zealand and secured the aforementioned splendid specimen from Mr Saville. Canterbury Kennel Club's Show ; The twenty-ninth annual show passed I without incident and was as usual a pleasant gathering, representing the I best dogs of the South Island and I their owners. There . were also some beautiful exhibits from the North Island but not as many as the | club would have liked. Possibly in 1 these days of stringency the fairly I heavy expense of sending a dog to a I lirst-class show may have accounted for ! the fewer entries from Ihe north. ' The show was admirably run and it | is far from an easy task to run successi fully a dog show extending over two j days and covering all breeds. The secretary, Mr W. M. Jack, had matters well in hand, and Mr T. Blumsky fulfilled the trying role of show manager admirably. Mr "Renwick" Brosnan kept the ring fed with exhibits, an I arduous task which could be made 1 much easier if owners would watch ! more closely the award board. One thing that somewhat marred the success of the show, and the one thing I heard any complaint about was having only one judge for all breeds where some clubs much smaller than Canterbury appoint as many as five. It must have been very disappointing for some of the exhibitors to have to wait until well on in the second day before entering the ring. As a consequence the award cards were not posted over the winners until late on the second day. I am not criticising the judge, Mr HinchlifT. of Wellington, for he got through his task expediously and not one single complaint did I hear about his placings (an exceptional state of affairs*, but I certainly think that if the club is to maintain its prestige and big entries, it will do well to appoint at least one, or possibly two more judges. This year there was no dance or social function, but visiting exhibitors were entertained at luncheon by the committee. Reviewing the exhibits as a whol« I saw many really first-class specimens, but thought many lacked bloom or show condition. Change of coat coupled with the recent sickness in kennels may have accounted for this. The Toys were of exceptional quality

and were well put down. For show condition the Terriers as a whole were hard to beat, and it will be a long time before I forget the combat in the show ring between Mr W. M. Jack's Wire Fox Terrier bitch, Rybury Request, and that outstanding Airedale, Mr H. Lightband's Warland Paddy. These two were ably shown and it must have been difficult for Mr HinchlifT to separate them. Mrs R. Y. White's English Setter, Bracken of Beechwood, annexed seven firsts, the D.I.C. trophy and special for best English Setter in the show, while the same owner's bitch. Semaphore Jolly Countess, was awarded four firsts and the Jamieson Cup for the best English Setter bitch. Bracken of Beechwood has only once been beaten when at Ashburton. his sire, ch. Rapanui Ranger, took the premier award, Bracken being a close second. The Bull Dogs as usual created much interest, and they were an exceptionally good lot. Mr A. Warrilow's Jesmond Lilley secured the premier award, and Mr E. A. Rattray's took the puppy class. Considering their popularity, the Labrador entries were disappointing, but nothing could pass Mr C. V. McBeath's veteran. r:h. Pompey. The Springer Spaniels were well represented and Major R. S. HunterBlair's Broomhouse Rajah secured the ribbon for the best - Springer in the show, a popular win for this great field trial performer and his owner. It is .pleasing to hear that the show was a financial success, and the committee is to be congratulated.
