NEW BRIGHTON NOTES

ARRANGEMENTS FOR GALA A meeting called by the South Brighton Progress League to make further arrangements for the gala to be held in the Pleasant Point Domain, on New Year's Day, promised well for the success, of the function, there being a more representative gathering present than for some years past, including members of the South Brighton Tennis Club, the South Brighton Surf Club, and the Pleasant Point Yacht Club. It was decided that the profits from the gala be used in effecting improvements in South Brighton. The following were elected officers of the gala committee:—Chairman, Mr F. S. Woodward; joint secretaries and treasurers, Messrs A. S. Patterson and P. Buist; organiser, Mr H. Robinson; advertising committee, Messrs F. S. Woodward and F. W. Larcombe; dance committee, Mesdames C. Sawtell, S. J. Grammer, A. Hewitt, H. Robinson, C. Tyson, G. Duncan, and Messrs R. Campbell, A. E. Tyson, and C. Sawtell, Messrs T. C. Tyson, and J. S. Ainsworth were appointed auditors. Methodist Concert Described by the chairman (the Rev. S. Bailey) as being the most ambitious and successful entertainment held .in the Methodist schoolroom, the concert arranged by the choir under Mr F. Mead and held on Thursday attracted a large and appreciative audience. The choir of 36 voices was assisted by local artists and soloists from Christchurch. "The Viking Song" (Coleridge-Tay-lor) and "As Torrents in Summer (Elgar), by the choir, were especially enjoyed. The remainder of the programme included items by Mr Edwin Danholt (violin solo), Mr Flewellyn humour), Miss Byers and Miss Noeline Boyd (songs), Misses Joy and Tui Dean, character duo ,Mr Norman Goffin (cornet solo), Mr W. Wing (ventriloquist and magician), Miss Joy Dean (dance), and Messrs Walch (piano), Danholt (violin), and Goffin (cornet) in an instrumental trio. Free Kindergarten The coin afternoon held in the Methodist Schoolroom recently in aid of the funds of the local sub-branch of the free kindergarten association was well attended. The arrangements were made by the mothers' committee comprising Mesdames A. Adam, K. Lavender, L. Dixey, A. Henshaw, and the teachers, Miss M. Page and Miss J. Hood assisted. . Miss H. Hull, principal of kindergarten schools, was present, and thanked the committee for its effort. The winner of the musical parcel was Mrs J A. Cusack, and the peanut race was won by Mrs H. A. Bishop, Mrs G. Bundy, Mrs Henderson, and Miss J. Hood. Afternoon tea was served and community singing and games were held. Social Evenings The winners at the weekly progressive whist tournament held in tne Bowling Club pavilion on Tuesday were Mesdames R. Smith and C. Cnns'fhe following were the successful players at the School Committees euchre evening:—Mesdames S. Hamilton and J. Smith, Messrs R. H. Stapleton and J. H. Merritt, special prizes being won by Mrs Sullivan and Mr S. Grammer, and the competition by Mr S. Hamilton. The weekly euchre and dance conducted by the New Brighton subbranch of the Returned Soldiers Association in the Pier Hall was again very well patronised. The winners at cards were Mesdames G. Rodgers and V. Smith, Messrs W. Cant, J. Boyd, and A. Payne. The competition was won by Mrs C. Diehl. The dance music was played by Mrs H. Ross-Smith, assisted by Messrs E. Herbert and F. Arnold. Mr R. D. Kennedy was master of ceremonies. Novelty dances were won by Miss E. Hcdwing and Mr J. S. Thompson, and Mrs C. Saggers and Mr R. Beggs. Parents' Evening On Wednesday evening the parents and friends of pupils of the South Brighton Methodist Sunday School were the guests of the officers and teachers in the Bridge Street Hall. The superintendent, Mr A. E. Lawry, presided, and a pleasant evening was spent in competitions, games, and musical items. The artists were Messrs P. Skinner and G. Brooks and Miss Joan Buckley was at the piano, and Mr N. Perry was master of ceremonies. The secretary's report was presented by Miss J. Buckley, and showed the roll number to be:—Primary department 44, main school 46, Bible classes 18; total 108. Miss E. Buxton, the treasurer, m presenting the annual balance-sheet, said that the receipts amounted to £2O 3s and the expenditure to £l9 3s, so that the new season started with a credit of £l. Among those present were Mr and Mrs R. Campbell, Mr and Mrs G. Hewitt, Mr and Mrs E. Hawker, Mr and Mrs F. W. Larcombe, Mr and Mrs A. Buckley, Mr and Mrs C. Sawtell, Mr and Mrs H. Fisher, Mr and Mrs J. Cain, Mesdames J. Douglas, A. Christensen, M. Kermode, A. Andnson, J. Campbell, C. Barrow, S. Grammer, R. Wayman, I. Higgins, J. Lethaby, W. H. Erridge, C. Rogers. G. Chamberlain, A. H. Burtt, A. Bach, Misses M. Coleman, J. Buckley, and Airey, Messrs N. Hulme, R. Buxton, E. Scrivener, N. Perry, and A. E. Lawry. Temperance Union The annual meeting of the New Brighton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Methodist Schoolroom. Mrs H. M. Hall presided over an excellent attendance of members and also extended a welcome to several visitors. Mesdames Good and Moses reported that they had collected eggs, cakes, and jam for the St. John Ambulance Association's produce stall on NovemNEW BRIGHTON.

ber 8. Mrs S. J. Smith reported that the New Brighton Readers would give an evening on Tuesday, December 4, for the union. This would be a dramatised play-reading in costume of a period play. The invitation of the Methodist Ladies' Guild to attend a church service on Women's Sunday, November 25, was accepted. The secretary submitted the report of the activities of the branch for the year. This showed that the membership is now 6*3, with six honorary members. The cradle roll now has 69 mem*bers, and there are 23 subscribers to the "White Ribbon." Good work had been done in a number of departments, and a keen interest maintained. Complimentary remarks on the report were made by Miss Harband and Mesdames Hall and Moses. On behalf of the members, Miss B. M. Harband expressed their appreciation to Mrs H. M. Hall (president), who was retiring after 20 years' service as president of the branch. Miss Harband spoke of the untiring work Mrs Hall had done during her long period of leadership, and asked Mrs Hall to accept a silver tea service as a tangible token of the appreciation of the members. Mrs Hall responded. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs J. S. Duncan; vice-presidents, Mesdames Hall, Moses, Ellis, and S. J. Smith; honorary secretary, Mrs F. N. Mitchell; honoray treasurer, Mrs N. C. Fraser; superintendents of departments—Evangelistic, Mrs S. Bailey; good citizenship and scientific temperance, Mrs M. Moses; legal and parliamentary, Mrs S. J. Smith; cradle roll, Mrs F. Good; notable days, Mrs Lorgelly; peace and arbitration, Mrs Holloway; press reporter, Mrs F. M. Mitchell. NORTH BEACH SURF CLUB A meeting of the executive of the North Beach Surf Club was held on Thursday evening, when Mr V. G. Spiller presided. The opening day was fixed for November 25. It was decided to hold junior and intermediate exhibitions of life-saving. A new feature of the opening day programme will be the club handicap boat races round the buoy. Post entries will be received for these by Mr L. R. Moore at the club house. It was decided to secure new costumes for juniors and intermediates for the season. It was decided to hold a club swimming race on December 9 to determine place and position on the swimming ladder. There were 14 new members elected. The opening of the season dance will be held in the memorial hall on December 1. The committee is arranging a series of dances for visitors during the holidays. Waimairi Beach Club Mr 11. H. Hanna presided over a meeting of the Waimairi Beach Surf Club held on Thursday evening. Eight new members were elected and one resignation accepted. Messrs R. P. Round and J. A. Wilson were elected delegates to the Canterbury Surf Association. Messrs J. A. Wilson, A. Ironside, R. P. Round, and D. Benson were appointed a building committee to report on necessary repairs to the club's pavilion. The opening of the season *vas fixed for December 2, and the club captain and assistant secretary wdre appointed to draw up a programme of events. Burwood School Fete Mr H. Rowse presided over a well attended meeting of the school fete committee, held in the school on Thursday evening. The plan of the stalls drawn up by the space committee was presented and adopted. The chairman reported that the community sings and socials held in aid of the fete funds to date had realised £25. It was decided to hold a final community sing and dance in the school on Tuesday, November 27 It was decided to ask Mr R. w. Hawke M.P., to open the fete. '
