CHRISTCHURCH HARMONIC SOCIETY
o THIRD SUBSCRIPTION CONCERTS The third subscription concerts of the Christchurch Harmonic Society will -be held in the Civic Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday, November 28 and 29. The programme will, in its entirety, be one of Christmas music. The outstanding feature of the concert, no doubt, will be what is probably the first performance in New Zealand of the two magnificent choruses, "Sanctus" and "Cum Sancto Spiritu," from Bach's "B Minor Mass." No more diffilit or inspiring work has been undertaken by the society than these wonderful choruses from what is undoubtedly the finest, work of the great composer. Of little less musical interest will be the singing' of parts 1 and 2 of the "Christmas Oratorio," also by Bach. This is a work comparable to "The Messiah" jr> mag j nitude and but little known in New Zealand. It contains some fine solos, which will be in the capable hands of Miss Nellie Lowe (contralto), the Rev. L. A. North (baritone), and Mr T. E. West (tenor), and a number of rousing choruses and beautiful chorales.
The programme will be interspersed with a number of carols, including some of the most popular of the wellknown melodies and some more modern arrangements. In two carols the audience will be invited to join, and the choir, which will be under the baton of its conductor, Mr V. C. Peters, will be assisted by Miss Blanche Atkinson at the piano and Mr W. Melville Lawry at the grand organ. Box plans will open at Chas. Begg's on Friday next.
