BRITISH MOTOR-CARS
TO Til «DITO» Of THE PBIB3. Sir, —I have just read in the press that a large English motor firm, which enjoys large sales in this country, has paid the enormous amount of 100 per cent, dividend, and this after making huge votes to reserves. Now I would like to ask the question, Why is it necessary for such firms to make such strong appeals to t.ur patriotism, and exhort us to trade ■within the Empire and to buy British goods? Further, they demand a tariff preference that will place the American car beyond the price of the average buyer. With the margin of profit which they are enjoying, why cannot they reduce the price to a point where they will practically oust the American car? To secure the New Zealand car market for Britain would certainly be a wonderful help to the British people, . but it would be a mufch more commendable procedure on the part of such firms to secure it in'the manner 1 have stated than by appeals to our patriotism, while they enjoy a return of 100 per cent, per annum.—Yours, * tc -> N.Z. , November 14, 1934.
