NEW ZEALAND'S GREATEST SIRES

AN INTERESTING COMPARISON] In writing of the wonderful success of late gained by progeny of Limond, a contributor to the "Australasian" states that Limond's record is a notable one, but an analysis of it hardly supports the contention that he is the greatest of all New Zealand sires. The writer would not, for instance, place him ahead of Musket. Nor could he see that he is any more successful than Martian, whose record is a truly great one. The records of Limond and Martian are very similar in classic races; but Limond has slightly the better record in Derbies. Limond can claim two winners of the A.J.C. Derby in Ammon Ra and Theo, as against Martian's solitary winning representative, Cupidon. Limond has four New Zealand Derby winners, as against three by Martian, but whereas Limond has only one winner of the Great Northern Derby, Martian has five to his credit. Waikare won the Queensland Derby for Limond, and Ammon Ra the Caulfield Guineas. Limond, however, has the better record in the Legers, eight as against four. He also has one Victorian Derby winner in Theo. It was as a sire of Cup horses that Martian scored over Limond. Limond was successfully represented in the Metropolitan by Waikare, and Star Stranger was the solitary winner of the. race sired by Martian. Stanchion is the only Wellington Cup winner by Limond, but Martian had three winners of that race, six of the New Zealand Cup (including a dead-heat), one Melbourne Cup winner, one Australian Cup winner, and three winners of the Auckland Cup. and one Perth Cup winner.
