AVOIDING FLOOD HINDRANCE
. Christchurch-Nelson Road MAIN HIGHWAYS BOARD'S PLANS Traffic on the main highway between Christchurch and Nelson is frequently held up because of flooding on the road. Recently the South Island Motor Union wrote to the Main Highways Board asking that alterations to the road be made at the following points to avoid flooding interference: (1) Marriott's Creek, Rai Valley; (2) approach to the western end of the bridge at Canvastown; (3) Hog Swamp'just south of Seddon; (4) Stony Creek, four miles south of Kaikoura; and (5) Dip Creek at Ferniehurst. Bridges were suggested as the best means of overcoming the difficulties. A reply received by the South Island Motor Union at its meeting last night from the Highways Board dealt with the points of complaint. It stated: (1) tentative plans had been submitted for. the work on a culvert at Marriott's Creek but had been referred back for further information; (2) a survey of the approach to the bridge at Canvastown had been made and the work was under consideration to-day; (3) a re-survey of the work required at Hog Swamp had been commenced with the idea of improving on the original proposal; (4) plans were in hand for work at Stony Creek; and (5) plans were also in hand for the work at Dip Creek, Ferniehurst.
The letter added that it was hoped that all the works mentioned would be commenced, if not completed, during this season. The meeting expressed satisfaction at the reply received. The Automobile Association (Nelson) also wrote expressing satisfaction at the board's promise.
