TBIARU SUNDAY EXCURSION . Nearly 1000 excursionists visited i Timaru yesterday by the special trains ( from Christchurch and Dunedin. The ( train from Christchurch brought 408 passengers, while there were 560 arrivals from Dunedin. The weather was pleasant and sunny in the morning, but later the sky became over- ' cast. Conditions were, however, mild, , and in consequence many of the visi- <. tors took the opportunity of bathing in Caroline Bay. By the train which i left Timaru yesterday morning for : Christchurch there were 210 passengers. Armistice Day Armistice Day was observed in Timaru yesterday with the usual solemnity. The 11 a.m. services at the local churches were commenced earlier than usual in order that two minutes' silence might be fitting remembered, and appropriate services were preached to large congregations. At 10 a.m. members of the executive of the South Canterbury Returned Soldiers' Association, led by the president (Mr R. S. Goodman), assembled at the War Memorial at the park and paid their respects to the dead, and on behalf of the citizens, the Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) deposited a wreath there. "Reveille" was sounded after two minutes' silence, bringing the ceremony, to an end. Police Examination Examinations held in September among members of the police force desirous of qualifying for promotion resulted in the following Timaru passes: Sub-Inspector's examination (literary section): Constables R. M. Walden and J. Anderson; sergeant's examination (law section): Constable J. Devlin. A Serious Charge In the Magistrate's Court at Timaru on Saturday, before Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., John Forbes Fraser, a youth, was charged with carnal knowledge. He pleaded guilty and was committed to the Christchurch sittings of the Supreme Court for sentence. : Bail was allowed, self £SO, and one surety of £so.' Personal Dr. C. A. Paterson, who recently underwent a serious operation in Dunedin, is making a good recovery. Girls' High School Sports Perfect conditions wero experienced for the annual sports of the Timaru Girls' High School, which were held on the school grounds on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large gathering of parents and frionds of tho scholars. Although no times ■were kept for record purposes in the sports, nevertheless the competition was keen throughout, the standard of athletics being high. During tho afternoon the senior girls gave a display of Swedish drill on the lawns and tho junior girls were seen •in a number of excellently performed folk dances. _ Tho occasion was also taken to make a display of work, which covered a wide range and ■which was greatly admired. FAIRLIE The annual presentation of cups and trophies won during the season took place at a social evening held in the Aorangi Hall on Monday. Mr C. J. Talbot, president of the club, presided. He expressed his pleasure at again being present to make the presentations. He congratulated those who had been successful in winning, and wished the club success in the future. The following received prizes: —A grade aggregate for season, W. Whitehead; runner-up, W. Dorman; B grade, W. H*. Cook; runner-up, R. Cook; C grade, T. Mayne; runner-up, T. Cook; D grade, J. Riddle; runnerup B. Woods. Seven best nights' shoot, W. Whitehead; runner-up, W. Close; silver button for season, W. Close. Other trophies were won by W. Dorman, F. Kane (2), R. Fergusson (2), J, Riddle (2), J. Breen, B. Woods, B. Welsh, W. H. Cook, W. Close, W. Whitehead. V. Braddick, T. Cook, R. Cook, T. Mayne, A. Cuthill, and C. Charteris. The sympathy of the residents of the district with the wife and family of Mr W. G. Shaw, who met his death through an accident was demonstrated by the very large attendance at the funeral on Thursday. The service at the Presbyterirn Church, where the funeral left, and at the graveside, was conducted by the Rev. J. Fordyce. The Mackenzie County Council, by whom the deceased was employed, was represented by Messrs C. J. Talbot, A. Campbell, F. Carter, D. Fraser. and D. Jcune. Fellow employees were present and acted as pall-bearers. There were many floral tributes. WAIMATE

As the result of a police raid in Waimate on Saturday afternoon, R. Yesberg, billiards saloon proprietor, and J. J. Ryan, tobacconist, appeared in the Waimate Magistrate's Court later in the afternoon, charged with keeping a common gaming house. Both were remanded to appear at Timaru on Thursday next, bail of £SO being allowed. Mr George Dash, J.P., was on the bench.

At a meeting of the committee to arrange for the annual rose show it was decided to hold the show on Saturday, December 8. Mesdames A. G. Pitts, A. M. O'Brien, and J. C. Templer were appointed a schedule committee. It was resolved to hold several different sideshows in conjunction with the flower show, and helpers were appointed to manage them. A number of sub-com-mittees were s,et up to arrange details for the fixture.

Bro. W. Phillips, Arch D?uid, presided at a meeting of Ivy Lodge, U.A.0.D., when there was a good attendance of The United Friendly Societies' Council advised that the annual meeting would be held on November 30, and the notification of delegates appointed was requested. Bros. T. Riordan and J. J. Mumford reported on the meeting of the United Friendly Societies' Council, and they received a vote of thanks. Grand Lodge President, Bro. Freeman, and also the secretary, treasurer, and guardian from Grand Lodge, Christchurch, paid their annual official visit, each speaking on matters of interest to the lodge.

A euchre patty and dance, held in the Morven Hall in aid of the Morven Croquet Club, was very well attended, some 80 people being present. After keen play the euchre prizes were won by Mrs Tewaho and Mr Duggan, and the cribbage prizes by Mrs Baker and Mr Nolan. After supper dancing was enjoyed, the music being played by Miss Mary Cooney, and Mr Tavendale. Mr L. Rogers was master of ceremonies.

TEMUKA At its fortnightly meeting, the Lily of Temuka Druids Lodge was honoured by a visit from the Grand President, Bro. L. B. Freeman, and Grand Lodge officers. Bro. A. R. Davidson, A.D., presided. Other prominent visitors were District President, Sister R. Crum, and P.G. Bro. F. Chittock, of the Timaru Lodge. The Grand President gave a brief outline of the work carried out by the Board of Management during the year, principally the complete revision of the rules. Other speakers were Grand Treasurer, Ero J. T. Collins, a foundation member of the Temuka Lodge, Grand Guard Bro. G. McKenzie, and P.G.R's Bros. C. Barnes and F. Chittock. Supper was served and the Grand Lodge officers left for Christchurch.

The Grand Lodge officers of Canterbury attended the fortnightly meeting of the Oak Leaf Juvenile Lodge, when A.D. Bro. G. Bcnbow, presided over an attendance of 41 members. The Ratana sect celebrated the anniversary of the inception of the Ratana movement when special services--were conducted. Dinner was served in the Arowhenua Hall and a musical programme was given by the children

The funeral of the late Mrs Maria Gray took place at the Tcmuka Cemetery, and was very largely attended. The services at the house and at the graveside were conducted by Mr Ralph Beattie, of Wellington, and her sons acted as bearers. Mrs Gray came to New Zealand 55 years ago. from County Tyrone, Ireland, and resided for many years in the Ashburton district, where her husband followed farming pursuits. In 1919 the farm was leased, and the family came to Tcmuka where they have lived ever since. The late Mrs Gray leaves a husband and six sons and daughters. The anniversary of Armistice Day was observed in Tcmuka yesterday with a simple but impressive ceremony, held at the soldiers' memorial in the domain. Former soldiers, including South African Veterans, paraded at the Post Office, and headed by the Tcmuka Municipal Band, marched to the memorial, where there was a fairly large gathering. On the mound around the memorial were assembled the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan), Mr .1. King, president of the Returned Soldiers' Association, the Rev. L. A. Brooks (Methodist), and the Rev. C. L. Mountfort (Anglican), each of whom spoke briefly. On the first stroke of 11 o'clock by the town clock, Mr King placed a wreath of poppies on the memorial. The sounding of "Last Post" by Bandsman R. Boyle concluded the ceremony. The parade then reformed, with the addition of the Mayor and Councillors, and headed by the Municipal band, marched to the Presbyterian Church, which was packed. Taking for his text, "The Armistice, a Retrospect and a Prospect," Mr F. T. Reid (Homo Missionary) traversed the events, since the Armistice, leading up to the present unrest among the nations of the world.

GERALDINE Mrs W. White (Timaru) is staying in Geraldine as the guest of Mrs \V. H. Broad (South terrace). The monthly meeting of the Geraldine District High School Committee was held on Friday night, and was attended by Messrs A. J. Burmester (chairman), A. Sutherland, E. P. Bennett, C. J. Hay ward, the Rev, A. C. Lawry, and the headmaster (Mr A. W. Tucker). The financial statement showed that since the last meeting accounts amounting to £6 lis 5d had been paid. After payment of further accounts, amounting to £2 10s 4d, and providing for the caretaker's wages for the quarter, there would be a credit balance of £7 8s 2d. There was a credit balance of £23 6s lOd at the bank. The Canterbury Education Board wrote about the visit of the Duke of Gloucester to Timaru. The headmaster said that no teachers from the school would be available to take charge of the children, should the •committee decide to take them to Timaru. After discussion, it was decided to take no action in the matter. The

headmaster reported that in the primary department, the average attendance was 196 from a roll of 235, and in the secondary department the average was 51, from a roll number of 58. Messrs L. Grandi and S. H. Lapthorne were appointed a visiting committee for the month.
