EVENTS AT LYTTELTON
FRESH BREEZE AND FINE
WEATHER
■ The Canterbury Yacht and Motor-Boat Bjnb was favoured with almost ideal yachtjnj weather for its second series o£ races At Lyttelton on Saturday. There was a fresh jerth-easterly breeie in the earlier part of the afternoon, with just a light jobble on 'tM water, but the breeze had lessened conlideiahlf towards the conclusion of the racjjy, Results were:—
A CLASS W»im»n» (T- Harkess). scr .. .. 1 Yvonne (H. Norris), 18mm .. ..2 Mwsnji Collins?, 4min .. I! pjstime (A. Wilier), 4min .. -.4 Too only starters. Yvonne was last to faith, but won on her handicap. Considerable interest was taken in this race because it was Pastime's first start for many years. She did not do much good on tho first round, and was at a disadvantage in having no ijtonaker. On the wind in tho second round, however, sho showed hex- ability to point, und sprang a surprise on the other con.ttltaats *nd the onlookers. This was when ■he made ona long board ou tho port tack from tho lee mark, passing along close to tie shore at Diamond Htu-bour, just weathering the point, and finally going about almost in Ripa Island Bay. This tine piece oi -work brought the Pastime up to the llarangl again, but tho letter again had the advantage on tha run up the harbour. B CLASS Hakari (I. Newton), lmin . , .. „1 Wsterbeetle (W. Gilray), EJmin ■„.. 2 lolanthe (0. Allen), scr ' .. ..3 Cyclone (C. Pickett), scr . . ~., 4 X CLAS3 Irene (E. Sinclair), shr Ouiin 88soc .. 1 Jean (R. Hendry), uhr 6min 17sec .. 2 >Jl»nihl (0. Brassel), shr 6min 22sec .. 3 Elfin (J. T. Hobbs), Colleen (\V. Tissimsn), and Avenger (K. Priddy) finished in that order. This was a scratch r.ico, becauso some of the boats had changed hands since last atason and the handicapperg desired to give all a try-out. The new boat, Manihi, carried a leading jib which was used to advantaje. Early in tho first round Colleen carried away a forestay which had to bo replaced. There was a closo contest for Beoond place between Jean and Manihi. Tho latter was just half a length astern of Jean as the two hauled close for the finishing line. Hendry, sailing Joan, did not give way to the temptation to slack away when nearing the line, bat kept closo hauled with Manihi under Ilia lee, finally compelling Brassel to go about when almost on the line. I CLASS Xgahaa (\V. Stevens), lfiniin .. 1 Lolita (L. Hooper), lmin .. \> Restlesji (A. Sears), 2min ~ 3 Kositr, (M. Vincent), 4niin; Marina (T>. Smith), 6min; and Listless (D.
