- « MEMORIAL HUT AT PETONE OPENING BY GOVERNORGENERAL Before the New Zealand Expeditionary Force was demobilised overseas, after the Armistice, the officers and men, as an appreciation of the service rendered them by the Young Men's Christian Association during the war, subscribed to a fund that had as its object the establishment in New Zealand of a Young Men's Christian Association hut to serve as a memorial to the association's war work. About £I2OO was raised for the fund, which had been initiated by Major-General Sir Alexander Russell, and this was allowed to accumulate until about a year ago, when the ; national si Ow Yooag
Men's Christian Association, with.th® concurrence of the trustees of th* fund, decided to proceed with the erection of the hut. The need of th« big industrial population of Lower Hutt and Petone was felt to be the greatest, and here the hut was built. The official opening will take place on Sunday afternoon, when his Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, will unveil the memorial tablet and declare the building open. Others taking part in the ceremony will be Mr A. Scholefield, Mayor of Petone; Mr J. L. Hay, president of the 'national council of the Young Men's Christian Asse-' tion, who vu in charge of Young Men's Christian Association, war work in Colonel H. E. Avery, C.M.G., 0.5.0. (representing Sir Alexander Russell, who is absent in Australia), and Mr C. R. Edmond, who succeeded Mr Hay in France after the Armistice. ; Colonel Avery will hand over the deeds of the building, ahd afterward# the key will be given to Mr w. B.
