NORTH CANTERBURY

—♦— i RANGIORA PERSONAL Adjutant J. H. Wilks, who has been in charge of the local Salvation Army corps for the last eight months, hasreceived advice that he has been transferred. He has not yet been advised of the district to which he will be going. At a meeting of the Rangiora Benevolent and Relief of Distress Committee, of which he was a member, yesterday afternoon, a motion of appreciation of his services was passed.

Mr and Mrs J. W. Stanton, who have been visiting the North Island, return to Rangiora this morning. Archdeacon A. C. Purchas and Deaconess M. E. Birchall, of St. John's Anglican Church, are attending the Synod at Christchurch.

County Kates Yesterday was the last day on which the 5 per cent, rebate was allowed on rates due to the Rangiora County Council for the year which ends on March 31 next. The amount of tho general rate struck by the council for the current year was £3146, and in addition there was a hospital rate amounting to £1573. Up to and including yesterday the sum of £1550 was received, and the balance of £3169 will not be subject to the rebate.

Benevolent Committee A meeting of the Rangiora Bencvo- | lent and Relief of Distress Committee was held yesterday afternoon, the Mayor (Mr W. A. Rowse) presiding. The secretary (Mr C. I. Jennings) | reported that relief amounting to £l3 | 17s 6d had been granted since last , meeting. The relief fund at present i was showing a small credit. I An application for relief from an itinerant worker was refused. Rainfall Sixty-nine points of rain were recorded at Rangiora up to 9 a.m. yesterday for the previous 48 hours, as the result of the heavy rain during the week-end. Unemployment Committee The executive of the Rangiora Unemployment Committee met yesterday!. Present—The Mayor (Mr W. A. Rowse), chairman, Messrs J. R. Wilkinson, G. E. H. Davis (certifying officer), and H. M. Chappell (secretary). Application was received tor fresh contracts for six men for 26 weeks under the No. 4a scheme. . The Unemployment Bureau, Christchurch, advised that the committee's quota of new boots for relief workers would be available next week. Two applications were received under the No. 4a scheme, and one new registration was approved. During this week, it was reported, 1 there would be 19 men, the same number as last week, on the No. 4a scheme. Road Cycle Race The first of a series of road cycle races conducted by the Rangiora Amateur Cycling Club will be held over a six and a half miles course, twice round the golf links block, on Thursday evening. The race will begin at the county council corner. A race, for boys 14 years and under will also be held, and will begin just before the other riders are sent away. W.E.A. Concert The Rangiora Workers' Educational Association class held its annual break-up concert last evening. There was a good attendance of members and their friends and all enjoyed a pleasant evening. The temporary stage was prettily decorated, and the fancy costumes worn by the characters in the plays all added to the entertainment. A hearty supper and complimentary speeches brought the evening to a close. The programme was as follows:—Two-act play, "Jungle's Wooing" (Pickwick Papers), Misses B. Boyd, C. G. Mac Donald, Messrs J. Whitehouse, N. Goldsbury, S. T. Seward, A. C. Ferris, and C. Arnott; reading, Miss Betty Hughes; dialogue, "The Supper Party" (Martin Chuzzlewit), Miss R. Howell and Miss R. Watson; recitation, Miss Ida Staples; oneact play, "Catherine Parr," Miss Betty Hughes and Mr Robert H. Ellis; humorous reading, "Mr Candle asks for Apple Pie," Mr Robert H. Ellis. The producer and organiser was Mrs A. Hughes. Boy Scouts' Troop The annual meeting of the Rangiora Boy Scouts' Troop was held last evening, the president (Mr W. A. Rowse) presiding. The annual report was presented by the scoutmaster (Mr G. Southgate), who stated that he was sorry that the public of Rangiora showed so little interest in the movement. A camp was held in the vicinity of Mount Grey, 20 boys attending. There were 38 boys in the troop. He had reorganised the senior boys into patrols and had endeavoured to concentrate on the juniors. He would like to see an official scoutmaster appointed. He thanked Mr P. L. Rouse for his assistance, and also others who had endeavoured to keep the troop going. Mrs F. Hunt, reporting on the cubs, said the boys would prefer a i cubmaster. They had not had a meeting since August. The balance-sheet! showed that the year began with a credit of £7 10s 4d, and finished with a credit of £8 13s Bd.

Mr Southgate said it was proposed to run several week-end camps during the year. They would be in charge of the senior boys of the troop. The chairman said it was disappointing not to be able to obtain the services of the scoutmaster, but there were one or two prospects in view. Thanks were due to Messrs Southgate and Rouse for their work. The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr W. A. Rowse; vice-presi-dents. Archdeacon A. C. Purchas and the Rev. T. Coatsworth; secretary, Mr R. McKenzie (pro tern); treasurer, Mr T. Henderson; committee, re-elected, with power to add. It was left to Mr G. Neuble to interview a prospective cubmaster. The balance-sheet for the entertainment recently given by the Toe H Club (Christchurch) showed that the troop would benefit to the extent of £1 18s 6d.

Fire Briffade Social The last of a series of socials which have been conducted throughout the winter months by members of the Rangiora Fire Brigade was held m the brigade social rooms last evening, when members of the brigade played a crib and euchre match with the honorary members. The brigade won the euchre by a margin of 20 points ana the crib by 6 games to 3. The trophies won during the series were presented by Brigade Superintendent C. W. Tyler as follows: Grand aggregate cup, B. Dench; run-ner-up, A. G. Hunnibell; cup for billiards and snooker, B. Dench; euchre aggregate, A. G. Hunnibell 1, T. Barber 2; crib aggregate, W. J. Ford 1, A. G. Hunnibell 2; snopker aggregate, A. Watson 1, R. J. Lace 2; billiards, B. Dench 1, A. Sheppard 2; special prize for cards, B. Dench; special prize for billiards and snooker, A. Sheppard.

KAIAPOI The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Pines Beach Association was held last night, the president (Mr J. E. Monk) presiding over a well-attended meeting. The annual report stated that extensive alterations had been carried out to the social hall during the last year The hall had been extended and 'dressing and card rooms and an entrance porch had been added. These and general maintenance works had been made possible by holding successful carnivals and dances and by the grant of £6O made by the Kaiapoi Borough Council to the association's funds.. The beach reserve had been greatly improved by the Kaiapoi Borough Council's work in filling in low-lying ground and forming new roads with relief labour. Extensive planting of marram erasp»nd lupins had been carried out on tha foreshore, and nymy portions which a | : few years ago were bare sand were I now showing young grass. A donation of £1 Is was made to the Kaiapoi division of the St. John Ambulance AssoIt was unanimously decided that the association appoint a deputation to wait upon the Kaiapoi Borough Council requesting it to agree to the transfer of the beach reserve to the Kaiapoi Pines Beach Association to be administered by a body to be elected by that association. It- was decided to accept an invitation to a conference with the Kairaki Beach Association and the Waimakariri Sailing and Club about the dredging of Saltwater Creek.

HANMER SPRINGS Recently at the school Mr Alan Wagner, who is going to England, was farewelled by the boys of the woodwork class, the headmaster, and the members of the school committee. The headmaster spoke in terms of high appreciation of the work done in this class over a period of two years, and pointed ont the benefit received by the boys under the tuition and influence of Mr Wagner. The Rev. C. C. Sedgewick, chairman of the school committee, spoke in similar terms on behalf of the school committee. Master Demond Muir, on behalf of those present, presented Mr Wagner with a fountain pen. The recipient made a very interesting reply and thanked the boys, committee, and headmaster. At the monthly meeting of the school committee all members were present. The Revi* C. C. Sedgewick presided. Receipts amounting to £4 2s6d and accounts £2 17s lOd were passed for payment. The inspector's report on the annual visit to the school was before the meeting and was considered highly satisfactory, and a vote of appreciation and congratulation to the headmaster, Mr J. T. Kibblewhite, and his assistant, Miss E. Witty, was recorded. Arrangements were put in hand for the participation of the children in the demonstration in Christchurch during the Royal visit.

WAIAU j A social function was held in the Waiau Public Hall, when there was a large attendance of residents to say good-bye to Mr and Mrs D. D. Wall and family, who are leaving the district for Fairlie, where Mr Wall has been transferred on promotion as stationmaster. Mr Wall has been stationmaster at Waiau for six years. Mr G. White, on behaif of the residents, presented Mr Wall with a cheque and Mrs Wall with a bronze palm bowl. Mr K. Dunbar, on behalf of the Miniature Rifle Club, of which Mr Wall has been treasurer for three years, presented Mr and Mrs Wall with a reversible hearth rug. Mr Wall responded. Musical items were given by the Rev. E. B. Moore and Mr M. Rogers. Dance music was played by the Waiau Band, extras being played by Miss Edna Powis. ROTHERHAM The Rotherham Tennis Club experienced glorious weather for their opening day. The Rev. E. B. Moore, president of the club, declared the courts open, wishing the club a very successful season. The opening set was played by Mr Moore and Miss Jean Mcintosh and Mr Batchelor and Miss M. Boag. Afternoon tea was served. The members of the Rotherham Ladies' Presbyterian Guild were the guests of Mrs F. Edwards, "Mount Bassett." A very pleasant afternoon was spent. Competitions were won by Mrs Batchelor and Mrs M. Anderson. Songs were sung by Mrs R. W. Skinner and pianoforte solos were played by Mrs Edwards. Mr and Mrs A. Dickie and Miss Daphne Dickie have left Rotherham for their new home in Nelson. After two or three days fine weather heavy rain again fell during the weekend, 25 points being registered for the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. on Monday.

CHEVIOT Miss Mi Sloss will be the guest of Mrs Truman, Ashburton, for the ladies' golf tournament. Mrs A. Gillanders, - Misses M. O'Boyle, and N. Childs will be the guests of Mrs Amos, Ashburton, for the ladies' golf tournament. Messrs J. Y. Moir and J. D. E. Winskill, Cheviot, who have been spending n fortnight fishing at Lake Acland and Lake Tripp, Ashburton, returned to Cheviot on Friday.

VVAIPARA At the ftnal social in aid of the school funds, prizes were won by Mrs Campbell, Mrs Topp, and Messrs F. Quigley and L. Cooper. The aggregate prizes were won by Mrs Forsyth and Mr L. Cooper. Music for the dancing was ployed by Mrs Ferguson and extras by Mrs McLachlan, Miss Whyte, and Mr Burgess. Mr McLachlan was master of ceremonies.

KIMBERLEY There was a good attendance at the Kimberley school committee's fortnightly social held in the Kimberley Hall recently. The women's prize was won by Mrs D. Macaulay with 19 points, and Mr A. Macaulay won the men's prize with 22 points. The consolation prizes were awarded to Miss E. Reveley and Mr S. Syme. The women's aggregate prize was won by Mrs A. Boulton with 72 points Mrs D. Macaulay with 87 points being second. Mr T. Brown won the men's aggregate prize with 70 points, Mr G. Gartery was second with 68 points. After supper a dance was held, the music being played by the -Kimberley Melody Players. Mr S. Haft waS*mooter of ceremonies.

THE WARREN A very enjoyable evening was spent recently in The Warren school to aid school funds. The evening was spent in progressive euchre and dancing. Mr F. Gilmore sang a song. Music for dancing was played by Messrs Res* Elliot and T. Campbell, and Mr W. Paget was master of ceremonies. The winners at euchre were: Miss Eileen Thompson and Mr D. Gilbert, while the consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs J. Croy and Mr Ashby. The aggregate prizes were given by Mrs L. C. Meyers and Mr A. C. Cross; the winners being Mrs H. Cross and'Mr Ashby.

COOPER'S CREEK The Cooper's Creek social committee held the fortnightly euchre and dance when there was a large attendance, and an enjoyable evening was spent. More than 80 players took part in the euchre competitions, the successful players being: Women, Mrs W. Ryde 1, Miss J. Hutchison 2, Mrs J. Proffltt 3; men, Messrs A. Cameron 1, E. Marsh 2, H. Bunn 3. The Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Mesdames L. Marsh, B. Booth, and Miss R. Pavelka and Mr S. Bunn. Music for the dancing was played by Mrs Southgate, and extras by Mesdames G. Mehrtens, R. AKAROA Shopping week was concluded on Saturday with a carnival on the recreation ground. Again there was a large attendance of the public, particularly from the bays. A procession of decorated vehicles, led by the Akaroa Silver Band, paraded through the town. Great skill had been shown by some of the participants in decorating their lorries and motor-cars. Mr A. J. Clements's car was made to represent a warship, H.M.S. Progress, and the names of the officers of the Progress Association were placed at various parts of the "ship." Much amusement was caused by a waggon and two horses driven by Mrs T. Masefield, depicting "On Our Selection," with the whole Rudd family aboard. The prize list was as follows:—Decorated pram, Rona Hayward. Decorated bicycle, Leslie Kearney 1, Bruce McKenzie 2. Decorated costumes, Olive Gracia and Trevor Clements: Decorated motorcar. A. J. Read, "N.Z. Railways." Decorated lorry, A. J. Clements, "Free Milk." Mrs Masefield was awarded a special prize. Eight competitors took part in an under-hand woodchopping competition. The placings were: W. J. Mackay 1, W. R. Moore 2. j The tug-of-war contest was commenced on Friday night and completed on Saturday, the result being as follows:—First round—Akaroa Boating Club defeated Fishermen: Football Club defeated Balgueri street, Eastern Bays defeated Takamatua. Semi-final—Eastern Bays defeated Football Club; Boating Club a bye. Final—Boating Club (W. W. and D. C. Reid, K. A. Rhodes, R. J. Phillips, A. Churchill, and E. W. Kingston) defeated Eastern Bays (W. R. and C. H. Mqore, N. N. Mason, W. J. Mackay, M. Msltitpsh, and C. Priest). A successful dance conducted by the Akaroa Silver Band was held at the Boat Sheds. Messrs E. Longden and J. Drummond were masters of ceremonies, and Mrs J. McNabb played the music for dancing.

TEMPLETON The last of a series of six euchre nights under the auspices of the Templeton branch of the Plunket Society was held in the library. There was a good attendance. The successful players were Mrs Ayres and Mr George Watson. The winners of the aggregate for the tournament were Mrs Elwood and Mr W. Hinton.

TAI TAPU An enjoyable time was spent at the opening of the Tai Tapu Tennis Club season. Though frequent showers .fell in the morning, the weather in the afternoon was fine but dull. Visitors were present from Prebbleton and Barrington Street Clubs. A bright log fire blazed in the pavilion, where afternoon tea was served by the club members. Mr G. Mangels (president of the club), on behalf of members, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, and complimented the club upon having such well-kept grounds. He wished the club a successful time, and declared the season open, after asking the captain (Mr D. Suckling) to serve the first ball. The work of tar-sealing the main road to Tai Tapu is nearing completion. LITTLE RIVER The annual meeting of the Little River Croquet Club was held recently, A motion of condolence was passed to the relatives and friends of the late Mr T. Thompson. The election of officers resulted:—Patroness, Mrs J. F. Buchanan; president, Mrs R. Birdling; vice-presidents, Mrs Lewthwaite, sen, Mrs Trail, Mrs Bell, Mrs H. White, Mrs D. Richards, Mrs H. Birdling, Mrs H. Lewthwaite, Mrs J. Humphries, sen., Mrs Aitken, Mrs Dawson, Mrs J. O. Coop, Misses A. and M. Coop, H. Montgomery, and Mr F. G. Birdling; committee, Mesdames F. Crockett (secretary), C. Dutton, H. French, Gibb, G. Giddens, W. Lewthwaite, R. Vanstone, and Mr Gibb; handicappers, Mesdames French, Vanstone, and Mr Gibb; ground committee, Mesdames Crockett, French, and Mr Gibb; auditor, Mr W. Aitken; secretary and treasurer, Mrs F. Crockett. It was resolved that the opening day be held on October 20, and that members' subscriptions be 10s, as usual. It was resolved that members be allowed to coach children from the age of 10 to 18 free of charge.

LINCOLN A dance was held in the public'hall under the auspices of the hall committee. Holland's orchestra played the music. A Monte Carlo was won by Miss Ford and partner. Euchre prize's were won by Mrs C. Miles and Mr S. Major. BLOOMFIELD A huge crowd attended the annual jubilee dance held in the Broomfield school. Music was played by Ashby's dance band from Christchurch, and extras were played by Miss Lucy Kidd, of Amberley, and Mr Les.
