SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss Mary Thorpe (Otipua) is the guest of Mrs Westmacott (Nile street). Mr and Mrs James Grant (Gray's Hills, Mackenzie Country) spent the week-end with Mrs A. Grant ("Aigantighe," Wai-iti road). Miss Nancy Howell ("Ranui," Grey road) is spending some days with Mrs B. H. Howell (Cave). Miss Jean Horwell (Kitchener square) will be the guest of Miss Millichamp (Tinwald), for the Ashbur* ton women's golf tournament. Mr and Mrs J. B. Nicoll (Ashburton) spent the week-end with Mrs E. G. Kerr ("Ardgour," Sealy street). I Mrs E. G. Kerr and Mrs J. C. Templer (Waimate) will be the guests of Mrs J. B. Nicoll (Ashburton) for the women's golf tournament. SOUTH CANTERBURY WOMEN'S CLUB PLAY READING CIRCLE The Play-Reading Circle of the South Canterbury Women's Club closed a successful season last night, when Emlyn Williams's adaptation of "The Late Christopher Bean" was read. The rooms were artistically decorated with arum lilies and japonica. Miss C. Mills, president of the circle, wore a frock of black lace, embossed with chenille roses.

"500" PARTIES The usual fortnightly 500 party in aid of the relief of distress fund was held at Mrs Roberts's home in Meredith street. Prizes were won by Mesdames Borley, Rennic, and Hobbs, and a competition by Mrs Bradshaw. A donation was received from Mrs Cook. Those present were Mesdames Roberts, Parlane, Tongue, Moylc, Hobbs, Borley, Cook, Burford, Blair, Allen, Rennie, Retallick, Malone, Bradshaw, and Presland. Members of St. Paul's Guild, Papanui, held an enjoyable "500" party in the schoolroom recently. Prize-winners were Mesdames Corby, Rich, Scabrook, Thorn, Schaffer, and Biggs, Messrs Wilson, Biggs, and Woodham. Amongst those present were the Rev. and Mrs W. H. SOUTH BRIGHTON SOCIAL The South Brighton Progress League entertained the North Linwood Burgesses' Association at a return social held in the Bridge Street Hall on Tuesday. Nearly 50 adherents of the' association were present, including.the l president, Mr T. H. Butterfleld. A welcome was extended by Mr S. J. Grammer, vice-president of the league. The card tournament for the Fairlie Cup resulted in a win for South Brighton by 34 points. In presenting the cup, Mr Butterfield congratulated the visitors on their handsome win and said he was sure the donor would be pleased that it was being won in turn by the different associations. Dancing was enjoyed to music by Mr R. Paddy, and Mr S. J. Grammer was master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo was won by Mrs J. Mcllroy and Mr V. Grammer.

GARDEN PARTY AT KAIAPOI Members of the Kaiapoi branch of the Mothers' Union entertained the members of the Woodend and Waikuku branch at a garden party held at the home of Mr and Mrs H. C. Revell, "Korotueka," Kaiapoi. The president, Mrs C. L. Sparrow, and Mrs Revell welcomed the guests, who spent a pleasant afternoon with various competitions. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn. The competitions were won as follows: Putting, Mrs R. Macdonald; foKage collection, Mrs J. O'Connor 1, Mrs R. Macdonald and Mrs G. Green equal 2; dartthrowing, Miss H. Fisher 1, Mrs D. Williams 2; egg and spoon race, Mrs H. Little 1, Mrs J. Shaw 2; stepping competition, Mrs E. A. Wood 1, Mrs Stalker 2.

BIRTHDAY PARTY At the home of Mr and Mrs W. H. Gillespie ("Ngaherehere," Glentui), the seventieth birthday anniversary of Mr F. Loffhagen (Oxford) was celebrated with a party given by his daughters. The programme included community singing, competitions, games, and cards, and items were given by Misses M. Mann and R. Harbidge, Messrs Hawes, Crampton, Baker, Naylor, Baker, sen., and Mann. During the evening guests also extended birthday greetings to Mrs W. J. Jenkins, an old and esteemed friend of the family. The guest of honour cut the birthday cake which was decorated with 70 candles. Those present included Mr and Mrs F. Loffhagen, Mr and Mrs W. J. Jenkins (Waddington), Mr and Mrs W. H. Gillespie, Mr and Mrs J. Mann, Mr and Mrs W. Higginson, Mr and Mrs G. G. Harbidge, Mr and Mrs A. V. Baker (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs K. A. Mann (Ashburton), Mr and Mrs G.
