Members of the council of the Southland Acclimatisation Society were very much interested in a letter from a Wyndham sportsman who wrote that he had seen the partly decomposed body of a fish of unusual proportions. The tail was missing, but the remaining portion of the body is 46 inches long. The fish was left stranded and dead after a recent flood in the Mataura river. "It is either a trout or a salman, but I do not know which," the writer stated. Visions of a miniature Loch Ness monster, however, were speedily dispelled by the secretary (Mr D. Cuthbertson), who stated that he had received a report from the ranger as follows:—"The fish had been washed up about two months earlier. I am quite certain the fish was an eel with about 15 inches of its tail off. • The eel would weigh approximately 241b and when alive would measure about sft 6in. With a large piece of the tail gone the appearance of the fish was quiti altered. The skin, bones, and moutl were identical with those of an eel It was also very oily." This information was received with hearts laughter. The ranger's report wai scouted by the sportsman, who in i further letter wrote: "I regret tha I ever troubled to report the mattei ; at? I look upon the report of you ranger as an insult not only to mj ' own but also to the intelligence o i five or six others who inspected thi fish."
