Negotiations for a Coalition Cabinet in Australia have fallen through, and the Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons) intends to proceed immediately with the formation of his own Ministry.
Federal members of the Country party met to-day to discuss the terms of the Prime Minister's invitation to them to form a coalition, and it was officially stated that they had been offered three full portfolios, one of which would be the vice-presidency of the Executive Council. Mr Lyons reserved the right to veto any individual, who might not be acceptable to him, and the right to dispense with the services of any Minister who might not prove satisfactory.
Dr. Earle Page, leader of the Country party, communicated with Mr Lyons expressing willingness to enter into partnership in the Ministry, but saving that the Country party requ.. led the reconsideration of the terms. He desired an undertaking that the new government would modify its tariff policy in the interests of the primr.ry producers and in accordance with the spirit of Article Ten of the Ottawa treaty. Country party representation in the Cabinet, he said, should be based on its numerical strength, in which event it would be entitled to four portfolios, with its leader Deputy-Prime Minister. Mr Lyons telegraphed a reply regretting that the Country party was asking too much, and adding that he was unable to deviate from the tariff policy enunciated to the electors.
