* •- \ MEETING OF COMMITTEE OF| SOCIETY j i At the first meeting of the newlyappointed committee of the Canterbury Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, held last evening, Mr A. W. McGillivray was elected chairman for the third successive year. Mr R. Wilson was elected vice-chairman, and Messrs H. P. Bridge and C. G. McKellar to positions on the executive committee. In reply to a letter from the society asking that sheep should be killed before being placed on the rail, the New Zealand Refrigerating Company wrote that it had gone into the matter , before the end of last season and had ; decided to make changes in the prac- , tice in the direction indicated. ; Mrs A. L. Millington, organiser of j the junior league, reported that she ; had enrolled 35 members during the . last month, and had been engaged in arrangements for pet shows and com- j petitions in schools. Mrs Millington spoke of the import- . ance of the work of the junior league, ' and urgei that the provision of transport for the organiser would result in a - saving to the society through the increased subscriptions which would be obtained. The matter was left in the hands of a sub-committee. The financial statement disclosed that the society had an overdraft of £6B 18s 6d after the payment of all accounts. I The inspector, Mr D. J. White, reported that he had visited and inspected horse arid poultry saleyards | in Christchurch and Rangiora, and stock sales at Addington, Leeston, Rangiora, and Tinwald. He had inspected horses harnessed to vehicles near fruit and fish markets in the city, stock at the city abattoirs, Islington, end Belfast freezing works, and pigs at Green's factory. Addington. Visits had also been paid to many of the surrounding districts. Twelve persons had been cautioned, and four other complaints investigated.
