WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
NORTH CANTERBURY FEDERATION A meeting of the executive committee of the North Canterbury Federation of Women's Institutes was held recently at the Young Men's Christian Association, Christchurch, and was attended by Mesdames B. L. Blunden, T. D. Mac Donald, Beatty, Couch, Ross Macdonald, and Miss Warren. Mrs Blunden, in the absence of the president, Mrs W. Deans, presided. A notice from the Dominion executive, stating that the committee had now an office at 10 Brandon street, Wellington, was received. The Dominion executive also wrote stating that they intend to stage an exhibition of arts and crafts at the conference in Auckland in July, 1935, and that members of institutes were invited to prepare crafts for the exhibition. Mrs Couch was appointed to furnish a report on "Food in relation to the country home," which the Dominion executive requested to be supplied. At the recent annual meeting of the North Canterbury branch of the British Drama League Mrs Moss Macdonald was appointed to the committee of that body to represent the institutes. Final arrangements for the forthcoming half-yearly meeting, which is to be . held at Frascati, Christchurch, on October 31, were made.
ASHBURTON JUNIOR The junior group of the Ashburton Women's Institute met, the president (Miss E. Collison) presiding. Miss E. J. Watt, matron of the Ashburton Hospital, gave an instructive tafk on home nursing. The October competition for cane trays was judged by Mrs M. F. L. Pitts, who awarded the prize to Miss Mai Willcrs. It was decided that the competition for next month would be for the best article made from two ounces of wool, and the roll-call for the November meeting would take the form of an exhibition of members' own old photographs. The hostesses for the evening were Misses D. Burgess and E. Oakley.
DORIE The monthly meeting of the Dorie Women's Institute was held in the Dorie Hall, Mrs Richards presiding over a good attendance of members. Mrs R. A. Oakley gave a half-hour song recital, which was much enjoyed. A small flower show was held, Mrs J. Lambie acting as judge. GLENTUNNEL The usual monthly meeting of the Glentunnel Women's Institute was held in the Public Hall, Glentunnel. Mrs L. A. Marshall presided. Arrangements were completed for the visit to "Olahuna," to-morrow. Delegates were appointed to attend the conference of the North Canterbury Federation to be held in Christchurch at the end of October. Dr. Aylward (Coalgatc) gave an instructive address on "First Aid." There was a fine display of flowers in the competition for the most artistic vase o£ spring flowers. Mrs G. Derrett and Mrs B! C. Rutherford, who wore visiting the institute, were the judges. The competitions resulted as follows:—Vase of spring flowers, Mrs W. J. Harrison 1, Mrs A. B. Leeming 2, Miss I. Gilmour 3; shortbread, Miss I. Gilmour 1, Mrs D. Boyes 2, Mrs J. Rhodes* 3: best bloom, Mrs W. J. Harrison 1, Mrs D. Boyes 2, Miss I. Gilmour 3. The bring-and-buy table was a financial success. Afternoon tea was served by Miss J. Barlow and Mesdames D. Dickie and A. B, Leeming.
GEttALDINE There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Geraldine Women's Institute on Tuesday night, Miss M. Cruickshank (the president) presiding. The resignation of Mrs S. Pocock, through her removal from the district, was accepted with regret. Mesdames C. S. Davies and L. S. King were appointed to represent the Geraldine Institute at the half-yearly federation meeting to be held at Temuka on October 30. An excellent demonstration was given by Mrs Davey (Rangitira Valley) on patchwork and quilting. She explained both Italian and English quilting and exhibited a number of articles. A "bring and buy" stall proved successful, while a stall for the sale of articles from he Blind Institute, under the charge of Mrs Z. O. Sherratt, met with a liberal response. Competitions were won as follows:—Hand-worked supper cloth (judged by Mrs Davey), Miss M. L. Grant 1, Miss J. Vincent 2, Miss R. Grindcll 3; shortbread (popular vote), Mrs L. S. King 1, Mrs P. Russell 2, Mrs H. V. Firman 3. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Butterick, Baguley, P. Russell, A. Sutherland, W. K. Murray, Misses Pratt, Paterson, Ellis, and Roberts.
GERALDINE GROUP The Geraldine Group of Women's Institutes held a very successful concert in the Town Hall in aid of the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade, and the Geraldine Benevolent Guild. The
Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald), who presided, thanked the performers and the Institute Group for assisting two worthy causes in the town. The programme included a choir's competitition, which was won by the Orari Women's Institute. Mr Brian King was the judge of the competition. The remainder of the programme included songs by Mrs Ruddenklau (Rangitata), Mrs Guild (Temuka), Mr G. Knibb (Geraldine), a group item by the Gapes Valley Institute, recitations by Mr Bolderston (Clandeboye), and a one-act play entitled "The Cage," enacted by the Geraldine Players.
HINDS At the monthly meeting of the Hinds Women's Institute the president (Mrs J. McQuilkin) presided over a fair attendance. The box of leather goods to be sold on behalf of the disabled soldiers was received. It was reported that the entertainment held in September in conjunction with the Willowby-Eiffelton Women's Institute, had proved a success both socially and financially. Mesdames Langdon and Lennie were elected to the committee. Mr Millichamp, of Tinwald, gave an interesting talk on gardening. The hostesses were Mesdames Frampton and Dobson and Miss Rose Frampton. Large entries were received for the competitions, which resulted as follows:—Arranged spring flowers, in glass jar: Mrs Joiner 1, Mrs Lennie 2, Mrs Tarbotton 3. Specimen bloom: Mrs Tarbotton 1 and 2, Miss Faith Rickard 3. Jar of marmalade: Mrs Tarbotton 1, Mrs Lennie 2.
IKAWAI The president (Mrs A. Bell) presided at the monthly meeting of the Ikawai Women's Institute. The meeting passed a motion of sympathy with Mrs Verity in the loss of her brother, and appointed Mrs W. Bartlett and Miss K. Brown as delegates to the conference of the South Canterbury Federation. An interesting report on the recent Dominion conference at Wellington was given by Mrs F. G. McRae. The competitions resulted: — Worked toilet set: Mrs Waldie 1, Miss L. Wall ana Mrs F. G. Mcßae, equal, 2. Best pound of butter: Mrs Redpath 1, Mrs Wall 2, Mrs Dugdale and Mrs Rolfe, equal, 3. Best bunch of violets: Mrs Bartlett 1, Miss L. Wall and Mrs Redpath, equal, 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs McRae and Miss Milner.
LE BON'S BAY The Le Bon's Bay Women's Institute held its monthly meeting, Mrs Morrison presiding. A parcel of Returned Soldiers' Handicrafts, also wickerware from the Blind Institute in Auckland, was on sale, and excellent business was done. It was resolved to send a delegate to the Conference in Christchurch. Miss Win. Leonardo gava an interesting demonstration on the making of seagrass stools. Miss Leonardo judged the competitions, the winners of which were: Three specimen blooms of spring flowers, Miss G. G. Leonard 1, Miss Jean Dalglish 2, Mrs Lodge 3; Sponge Roll. Miss G. Leonardo 1, Mrs Mora 2, Mrs Lodge 3. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Truman and H. Barker.
MAYFIELD The monthly meeting of the Mayfield Women's Institute Was held in the Band Hall, Mrs C. Sewell presiding over a large attendance of members and visitors. Mrs G. A. Meikle was welcomed as a new member of the institute. A vote of sympathy was passed with Miss E. Maidens in her bereavement. A display of handicrafts learned at the group school at Mount Somers was greatly admired, also a competition for an iced cake decorated with crystallised flowers, the result of which was: Mrs K. Ritchie 1, Mrs C. Dunstan 2, Mrs E. W. Robots 3. The choir songs, "Drink to Me Only" and "My Bonnie," were sung by some of the members, and a solo was given by Mrs S, Shimmin, who also played for community singing. MOUNT NESSING The third birthday party of the Mount Nessing Women's Institute was celebrated by a musical and dramatic entertainment. The hall was crowded with an appreciative audience. Songs were sung by Mrs P. Kidd and Mrs I. Black. Monologues were given by Mrs Austin and Mrs Glass. Three one-act plays were staged, those taking part being Mesdames R. W. Irving, P. Kidd, J. Glass, J. C. Macaulay, W. Simpson, and Misses C. Irving, E. Macaulay, and P. Brown. After the performance the birthday cake, made by Mrs P. Kidd and iced by Mrs Askin, was given place of honour on (he stage. The president, Mrs R. W. Irving, lit the candles, Mrs Waters, who had represented the women's institute at the Dominion conference, blew them out, and Mrs P. Kidd (vicepresident) cut the cake. Mrs Austin, on behalf of the institute, presented Mrs I. Black, a member who has left the district, with a women's institute's sugar spoon. The remainder of the evening was spent with dancing, the music being played by the Barrett orchestra.
SOUTHBRIDGE At the monthly meeting of the Southbridgc Women's Institute the president, Mrs H. J. Greenwood, presided over a good attendance, i It was decided to assist with the selling of articles made by the returned soldiers. A competition, "Celebrities," was by Mrs T. H. Bennet, and another, "Trees,'' by Miss Doris Lilley. The set competition, "Best Flower in my Garden," was won. by Mrs A. J. Inwood, with Miss E. Maw second and third. Miss D. Lilley won a competition for best seed cake. It was reported that £1 18s lOd has been raised by a challenge cards match to assist the institute's funds. It is probable that another match will be arranged. Items were given by Miss A. Brears (piano solo), Mesdames W. C. Eggelton and D. W. Hayes (duet), Mrs Couch playing the accompaniments. Those who took part in a short play, "The Little Paradise," were Mesdames R. F. Pilkington and T. H. Bennett and Misses M. Schnelle. J Greenall, E. Maw and I. Lewton. The hostesses were Mesdames C. L. Wilson, W. Hewatson, R. Lambie and P. E. Stevenson and Miss Stacc.
TE PIRITA Mrs Tamblin presided over a full attendance of members at a meeting of the Te Pirita Women's Institute. A competition for the best article made from a flour-bag, was won by Mrs Dodds 1, Miss Pannett 2, Mrs D. Inch 3. For the best plate of scones, Mesdames Reddecliffe, Brownlie, and D. Inch were equal. The best bloom was entered by Mrs D. Inch. Mrs Barber gave a demonstration on tinfoil work, which was very much appreciated, Hostesses were Mesdames Brownlie, D. Inch, and Reddecliffe.
WAIPARA At the October meeting of the Waipara Women's Institute, Mrs England (president) presided over a good attendance of members and friends. An interesting demonstration on floral work was given by Mrs Cassey (Christchurch). Mrs England and Mrs Con-i way were elected delegates to attend the conference of the North Canterbury Federation, to be held at Christchurch on October 30. A trophy was presented to Mrs Darroch for most points in the competitions for the last six months. A trophy given by the president for second place was won by Mrs Conway. Competitions were won as follows:—Best home-made chocolates: Mrs Conway 1, Mrs Darroch 2. Best vase of spring flowers: Mrs Conway 1, Mrs McLachlan 2. Best single bloom: Miss M. Whyte 1. TEMUKA A show of spring flowers was the feature of the monthly meeting of the Temuka Women's Institute, which, was held in the Parish Hall. The show was open to the public, and there was a very large attendance. Miss M. Ferguson presided. One new member was elected. The South Canterbury Federation advised that the halfyearly conference of delegates would be held in Temuka next month. Mesdames L. Prattley and Boyce were appointed delegates. A display of wcrk of disabled soldiers was held in conjunction with the meeting, and a number of the articles were disposed of. Mr A. W. Anderson, curator of the Timaru Gardens, delivered an address on "Garden Annuals." Mr Anderson judged the flowers, and Mrs D. C Clark the decorative exhibits. of the display. The results were:—Collection of spring flowers, Mrs D. Taylor 1, Mrs H. Mrs Walker, of the Allenton Institute, gave an interesting demonstration en making tinfoil pictures and paper poppies. A small presentation was made to Mrs D. Lay, who recently left the district, by Mrs C. Brand on behalf of the Institute. Competitions resulted as follows: Six jam tarts, Mrs J. Sinclair 1, Mrs J. M.
