WEIRS IN THE AVON
PLANS TO BE SUBMITTED j TO DRAINAGE BOARD j The erection of two weirs in the j Avon, one below the Antigua street j bridge and one near the bridge at the i tea kiosk in the Botanic gardens was advocated at a meeting of the Christ- j church Beautifying Association last evening, when it was decided to have Dlans Dreoared for submission to the Christcnurch Drainage Board. Mr R. B. Owen said the weirs would give good boating facilities from the Antigua street bridge to the Carlton Mill bridge. There was still £7O available from the floral fete fund, which was available for the work. The weirs could be lowered to allow boats to pass. They were of simple construction, and should meet the needs of the Drainage Board and the public. He had made arrangements with an engineering aut3iority to prepare plans. Mr J. Sturrock said he was against any temporary weirs; they should be permanent. The Drainage Board had no power to spend money on the Avon except as a drain. The City Council had no control of the river at all. Weirs were for the convenience of the public, and the public, through public bodies, must pay for them. A sub-comrnittee, consisting of Messrs Owen, E. Egglestone, and G. W. Bradley was set up to have plans prepared and submitted to the Drainage Board, and to the City Council with a view to having the weirs built with the funds from tihe floral fete now held by the council.
