Field-Marshal Lord Milne, formerly Chief of the Imperial StalT, has arrived for the Centenary celebrations. In an interview he said that allhoueh Australia was not within striking distance of any country by air it could be raided by aeroplanes from an enemy navy. He would therefore advise strengthening sea defences to protect trade routes, and equipping a chain of military and naval forts f'-om Portsmouth to Singapore. He emphasised that without the Singapore battleship base it would be impossible to help either Australia or New Zealand.
