GOOD FISHING AT THE SELWYN
- SNOW-FED RIVERS NOT PR O FIT A J! IK
With the fishing season now a week old most anglers a- still concentrating their attentions on the Selwyn and the slow running rivers which flow into the lake. Here the fish have hern found to be m excellent sport. As many as 50 b-.-its were counted on Ihe lower reaches of the Selwyn at one time over the week-end and nearly everyone had some success to report. One angler at the cut had a basket of la, among them a fine trout of six pounds. The Halswell is now yielding good bags, and if the weather remains suitable this stream will soon become as popular as the Selwyn. Tho:-:e who went to the Cam found the sport equal to the last few seasons, but. it is too early yet to find the beetle rise in full swing in the upper reaches. When the rise begins in earnest the slower running
streams will be left for stretches on the North branch and other quicker flowing rivers. No reports arc to hand of the lake fishing this season, but it. is early yet and this branch is at its best *ne:;l month.
The .snow-fed rivers were running very dirty all last wee]-: and (cw anglers risked wasting a day on them. The south braneli is, as yet., the best, proposition on the WaimaK'ariri. and one or two Jt.-di up to two pounds have been take.t there. Not a few anglers went to South Canterbury to try (he Opihi, but it was running very full, and though still fishable 1.0 outstanding bags have so far been reported. The Temuka lias been affected to a lesser extent.
