THE TECHNICAL COLLEGE
♦ BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEETS j | COMMITTEES APPOINTED The Board of Governor*; oi tho Christchurch Technical College met last evening, when Mr McGregor Wright presided. The principal (Dr. D. E. Hansom reported that it was proposed to hold the parents' visiting day and evening on October 25. Nineteen candidates in electrical engineering were presented at the city and guilds examinations in May, and 14 were successful. About the usual number of candidates would be presented for the university entrance examination, the day school candidates and a few from the evening school having entered for the school certificate examination as well. Jt was expected that there would be a fair number of entries fur examinations in commercial subjects conducted by the CEs-mber of Commerce and the Association of Commercial Science. rosltions for Boys In the second term of this year tho number of withdrawals from the Technical High School was 312. Of these 37 were girls, 15 of whom left to help at home, while the others had definitely taken positions. Of the 75 boys who left about five had given no record of their destination, and the other 70 had secured definite positions, largely through the agency of the college. This was even compared with normal times, a very good total of placements for the winter term, and the positions were of a very good type. For some weeks there had been a decided demand for girls to fill office positions. It was a coincidence that the number of new entrants in the evening classes in the second term was 112. All but 11 of them had previously been attending secondary schools, and it was pleasing to note that so many secondary school pupils were recognising that the evening classes were so helpful to them for advancement in their studies. The ne\ entrants came from 10 different secondary schools, and there were in attendance at the evening classes each year students representing almost every secondary school in the South Island. Gift of Picture The chairman repoi'ted that Miss R. Zeller, the art mistress on the staff, had bought a picture by Mr Sydney Thompson for presentation to the col- j lege. She stipulated that the picture should bo hung on a wall in the room j where she taught. Miss Zeller was given a vote of thanks by the board.
