UNEMPLOYMENT

PUBLIC MEETING ON SUNDAY * STAGING AND AMPLIFIERS FOR TIIE SPEAKERS The Mayor fMr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) has the arrangements in hand for the public meeting of citizens to be held on Sunday next to discuss the position of the unemployed. The Municipal Band has agreed to attend and will provide music for the hymns. Staging is being prepared for the speakers, and it has been arranged that, should the weather make it unsuitable to hold the meeting in Latimer square, it wnl be held in the Civic Theatre. Loudspeakers will be provided.

PROGRESS LEAGUE'S APPEAL BOX COLLECTIONS The street boxes which were placed in the city by the Canterbury Frogrcs League as part of the appeal on behalf of t\ie Mayor's fund for the relief of distress, were opened yesterday, and the sum of £ll 2s 7d collected. Tin sums taken from each of the four big boxes were respectively £5 9s 4d 'including five single £1 notes), £5 7s (including one £5 note): 4s lid and Is 4d. The 35, boxes which were placed in city shop premises were also opened, and the sum of £4 15s (id collect', d from them. The lowest return from any one box was Id, and the highest was lis 4d.

RELIEF OF DISTRESS RICCARTON KOROKIU The secretary of the Riccarton Do; - ough Relief Committee, Mr E. Prcbbl :, reports that 72 families were assisted at the local depot at the Town Hall last week. This represented an increase of four in the number of families who received relief during the previous week. This was the final distribution of relief, and the depot is now closed. All those desiring further assistance have been advised 1o make application to the Central Relief Depot in the city. There was again a good response to the pound scheme collection for the final week of tie committee's activities, and the committee is deeply grateful to all those persons who acted as collectors, and to those who so generously gave. A perambulator is still needed for one destitute family in the district, and the committee appeals to any resident who has a perambulator for which there is no further use to advise Miss Greer, at the borough council Office.
