TIMARU AND SOUTH CANTERBURY NEWS

TIMARU UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE The Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) presided over a meeting of the Timaru Unemployment Committee. ] The chairman said that since the i previous meeting, Mr G. T. Roller had J been elected to represent the unem- j ployed on the committee, and he trusted that he would be as good a representative as Mr S. Lang had been. It was decided that the representative of the unemployed should occupy office for two years, provided that ho was not off relief work for more than three months. A letter was received from the Commissioner of Unemployment (Mr G. C. Godfrey), thanking the committee for endeavouring to arrange with local j bodies to provide suitable works for local unemployed men, but stating that he did not think mere was occasion for the committee to become perturbed about any great influx of unemployed when the Waitaki hydro works were completed. The Public Works Department and the Unemployment Board were arranging to place men from these works, and provision had been made to absorb at least 160 married men from this undertaking. It was decided to thank ~the Timaru Orchestral Society for its gift of 25 tickets for unemployed to attend the society's concert. Mr Koller stated that the Unemployed Workers' Union had also received 25 tickets. A letter was received from the Commissioner of Unemployment stating that under the new house-building subsidy scheme applications for work valued at £32,000 had been rcccivec from the district, of which about £25,000 had been approved. A motion was carried that the attention of the Unemployment Board and of the Prime Minister (the Kt. Hon. G. W. Forbes), again be drawn to the necessity of providing increased allocations to unemployed men with dependents over the age of Hi and under 20. who were unable to obtain work. Mr H. G. Naylor then suggested that a register should be kept of unemployed youths dependent on their unemployed parents. Mr J. G. Leckie said that the position could be eased to a great extent if wool-growers would apply to the unemployment committee for shed hands. It was decided that such a register be kept and that efforts be made, in conjunction with the Boys' Welfare League, to find work for the ladconcerned. Mr Leckie suggested that a letter be sent to. South Canterbury Racing Club suggesting that where possible they should employ local men in th-_ totalisators, instead of giving such employment to men from other towns The chairman said that he could no! accept such a motion. What the racing clubs did in this respect was their own business. Cricket Association Mr B. R. Macdonald presided over the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Cncket Association. The annual report and balance-sheet, a summary of whicli has been published, were adopted without discussion. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr B. R. Macdonald; president, Mr A. E. Lawrence; vicepresidents, Archdeacon 11. W. Moriaghan and Mr W. Thomas; honorary secretary, Mr M. J. Angland: honorary treasurer, Mr F. S. Cavej* committee, Messrs R. C. Sunley, H. Purcell, W. Grant, G. J. Walker, B. R. Macdonald, R. Wilson, G. Murchison, Hobbs, W. Tubb, A. E. Fawcett, and L. B. Pearson; auditor, Mr L. E. Eaton; delegate to New Zealand council, Mr P. D. Mansell. In accordance with notice given, Mr Sunley moved that a rule be added to the effect that in matters concerning first grade teams only senior club delegates be given the right to vote. An amendment was moved by Mr L. M. Inglis that instead of making a rule the meeting recommend that the management committee act on the general principle that in matters solely affecting the senior competition the committee act in accordance with theopinion of the majority of senior delegates, and in matters solely affecting the junior and third grade competitions the committee act in accordance with the views of a majority of the delegates of the junior clubs. Both the amendment and motion were defeated.

On the motion of Mr Sunley, seconded by Mr G. Tuliy, it. was decided that Rule 41 be altered to read: "Two days shall be allowed for first grade cup matches and one day for other cup matches." It was also decided that the greatest number of points should decide the possession of each cup. In first grado matches for a win outright three poin's should be scored; a win on the first innings, two points; a tie or a draw, one point, one point each; in second and third grade matches two poin's should be scored for a win and one point for a tie or draw. If there should be a tie in cup points, the committee should have the right to decide that the teams concerned should play of.'. Ic was agreed that the Umpires' Association should appoint umpires for all matches. Baptist Tnnnis Club The Rev. Russell Grave presided over the annual meeting of the Baptist Tennis Club. The annual report showed that the membership was maintained succes ■- fully, but that play had been interfered with by unfavourable weather. The balance-sheet showed a considerable credit balance. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as fellows:—President, the Rev. Russell Grave; vice-presidents. Messrs T. Foden, R. Sinclair, and Head; club captain, Mr E. Spence; vice-captain. Mr N. Dellow: secretary. Miss J. Brice; treasurer, Miss T. Head; executive. above officers. Miss R. Sutherland, and Messrs J. Sutherland and .1. Thomson. Opening day was fixed for October 20. The Presbytery The Timnru Presbytery at its meeting yesterday decided to set up a committee, consisting of Timaru ministers and their elders, to arrange fitting celebrations of the sixtieth anniversary of the Presbytery. The moderator (the Rev. A. J. H. Dow) presided. The Revs. W. McNour, J. Mann. J. S. Fordyce. J. Baird, and W. J. Couling, and a representative from each of the Trinity, Waimate, Tcniuka. Pleasant Point, and Geraldine .sessions were appointed to represent the Presbytery at the general assembly at Dunedin next month. The Rev. W. McNeur was appointed to represent the presbytery on tho assembly committee of records and the Rev. J. Baird was appointed the representative on the assembly committee on standing committees. The moderator congratulated Mr L. J Hodson, home missionary, on completing 21 years' service in tho church.

On the motion of the Rev. A. Bcgg, seconded by the Rev. E. L. Williams, the following resolution was carried: "In view of the present world tendency to limit the right of freedom of speech and of the tendency evident in our own Dominion, and in view of the iact tnat our church had resolutely sought to establish and maintain this principle, the Presbytery affirms the right of every individual and party to give free expression to their views, provided that in doing so they do not incite to violence; and protests against any action that seeks to curtail this right. Further, the Presbytery would urge the Government to safeguard this right as an integral part of the British constitution, and is in favour of municipal authorities in the larger centres making available some reserve or other suitable place where those who are unable to hire a hall may have the opportunity to express themselves."

TEMUKA Mr Winston Shand, who has been visiting South Otago, has returned to Tcmuka. Mrs M. Wilkinson, of Greymouth, is the guest of Mrs D. A. Stewart (Birkett street). Nurse Garland, assistant to Dr. E. Bakcr-McLaglan, medical officer of the Education Department, is visiting the Tcmuka District High School. The vital statistics for the month of September (those of September, 1933, being in parenthesis! are;— Births 4 (6), deaths 4 (fi), marriages 0 (2). The quarterly returns are: Births 31 (21), deaths 14 (17), marriages 7 (8). A meeting of the library committee was held on Monday evening, Mr J. T. Smart presiding. The librarian. Mrs T. Webb, reported that 1444 books and •TOa magazines had been exchanged during the month. Two new members had joined during the month and two had resigned, leaving the membership at 223. The sum of £8 17s had been collected in subscriptions. Nine new books had been added to the library. Mr W. B. SutclifTe. the treasurer, reported that the bank account showed a debit of £3O. Accounts amounting to £)0 2s Cd were passed for payment. A special meeting of the committee of the Tcmuka and Gcraldine Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held in Tcmuka to appoint a secretary to fill the position renflered vacant bv the death of Mr J. Kenncdv. Mr L. A. Nicholas presided over a very large attendance. On a final ballot being taken Mr Evans was elected to the position. Mr Evans was secretary from 1010 to 1925, when he resigned, and Mr Kennedy was appointed. Mr R. Maddren was appointed treasurer. It was agreed to open a banking account m Temuka. and the secretary and treasurer were appointed to operate on the account. It was agreed to hold a special meeting on October 16 to revise the show schedule. Mr T. Bessell was elected a new member. Two hundred and twenty-three unemployed men have been provided with relief work in the Tcmuka district this week. The amendments that have been made to the 4B scheme provide that where farmers could and would pay the full wages to relief men without assistance from the Unemployment Fund, thev are t" W~ ■" to do so. Up to the present the subsidy has not been granted on contracts less than £25, but now subsidies may be approved on applications where the total cost of the undertaking is £lO or more. The rainfall for last month totalled 2 45 inches, the heaviest falls having taken place on September 25, when (here were 35 points, and September 20 when 52 points were recorded. For September, 1033. 1.2", inches were recorded. The rainfall for the year totals 20.48 inches, being made up as follows: -January 5.06, February 2.21, Mai-h 2 15. April 1.71, May 2.46, June 9.A2. July 1.06, August .00, September 2.45'

FATRME The Fairlic Debating Club held its usual meeting, Mr P. E. Neilson presiding over a Rood attendance of members. "That the present Parliamentary System is out of date" was tho subject: of. the evening's debate, the loams being: Messrs C. J. Talbot (leader), J. McLean, and P. E. Neilson (affirmative): Messrs F. C. Isitt (lender), J. Trotter, and It. Taylor (negative)/ The affirmative team was voted the winner by a large majority A .successful wind-up euchre party and dance were held in the school under the auspices of the school committee The room was decorated with streamers spring flowers, and greenery. The winners 'if the euchre prizes were: Ladies, Miss L. Elliot; men, Mr D. R. Elliot. Competitions resulted: Lucky snot waltz, Mrs McKinnon arid Mr Eliem: statue waltz, Mrs H. Peterson and Mr W. Toomey. The competitions for cakes were won by Mr D. S. Loder and Mrs I. Fulton. Music for the dance was played by Mrs Guy, and extras bv Messrs E and H. Peterson, Robertson, Cogar, JBayne, and Taylor. Mr A. Elliot was master of ceremonies.

GERALDINE Representatives of the Geraldine County and Borough Councils, and the Tomuka Borough Council met at Geraldine to nominate a representative to the South Canterbury Power Board, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr John Kennedy, who represented the Geraldine Borough and County, and the Temuka Borough Council. The chairman of the county council (Mr K. Mackenzie) presided. On the motion of Mr B. R. Macdonald and Mr A. W. Buzan. it was decided to nominate Mr K. Mackenzie for the position. The motion was carried with acclamation. An enjoyable concert in aid of the contest expenses, was given by the Geraldine District Band and supporting artists, in the Town Hall on Sunday evening. The programme was:— March. "Western Star," band; hymn, "Deep Harmony," band: selection, "Bells of Ouscley." band; songs. "Nearer My God to Thee," and "Oh, Star of Eve," Miss A. Williamson; cornet solos, "At Sunset," and "At Dawn," Mr A. Taylor; selection, "Carmen," band; song, "The Blind Ploughman." Mr C. Gimson; cornet duet, "Ida and Dot." Bandsmen A. Taylor and C. Ashby; euphonium solo. "Oh, Lovely Night," Bandsman F. Benbovv; song. "King Charles," Mr C. Gimson; cornet solo,'with band accompaniment, "Lead. Kindly Light," soloist Mr C. Ashby; march. "Colonel Bogey," band. Mr E. Undrill thanked those present for their support. A total rainfall of 3.00 in has been registered by Mr B. R. Macdonald
