In the first round of the women's singles Miss Betty Nuthall (England) beat Miss Elsie Gable (San Francisco), 6-4, 7-5. In the second round. Miss K. Siammers (England) beat Miss Claire Buckcer, 6-1, fi-1. R. Menzel (Czechoslovakia) sprained •n ankle when practising for the men's doubles, and is expected to be unable to play for several weeks.
PROFESSIONAL TOURNAMENT TILDEN'S SUCCESS LONDON, October 1. In the professional tennis tournament W. T. Tilden beat Martin Plaa, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. Maskell beat Glcdhill, 6-2, 6-J, 4-6, 6-1. Tilden and Gledhill beat Maskell and Plaa, 6-4, 9-7, 6-4. Tilden won the tournament, receiving a gold cigarette case. UURAYOOD PARK CLUB Mr J. Liggins presided ovr a largely-attended meeting of the rcwlyformel Burwood Park Tennis Club last evening. Mr Liggins reported that he had received advice from Mr «). S. Burnett that the reserves committee of the City Council had held a meeting and accepted his guarantee, and he hoped to start the work of putting down the courts en Monday. The reports of the canvassers appointed at lost meeting were received, and resulted in £32 8s being paid, ■which, with the £2O paid in last week, made a total of £52 8s in donations. A number of promised donations were still to be collected. The election of officers resulted: Patroness, Mrs J. Mallet; president, Mr J. Liggins; vice-presidents, Mr J. Cowan, Mr E. A. Adams, and MiGeorge Robinson; secretary. Miss Josephine Liggins; assistant-secretary, Miss Gladys Wet her all; treasurer, Mr Norman Bowles; auditor. Mr B. England; committee. Misses B. Pankhurst, M. Bucktin, Messrs E. Brown and N. Davenport; club captain, Mr N. Adams; vice-captain, Mr L. Goodman.
