Campbell, agricultural instructor of the Rangiora High School, left last evening for Palrnerston North, where he will attend a conference of the New Zealand Grasslands Association, i Vital Statistics . There was a decrease in births dur- j ing September, when compared with the corresponding month last year. The j number of deaths are the same for, both months, and marriages show an] increase of one. The figures are as follows, those for September last year being given in parenthesis:—Deaths 7 (7), births 7 (14), marriages 2 <\). The figures for the quarter ended September 30 this year arc:—Deaths 23, births 34, marriages 11. New Road Formed Work was begun Inst week on opening up a new roadway between Percival and Green streets, to give a frontage to a number of building sites, which have been subdivided by th/; trustees of the estate of the late Mr Mark Scott. The roadway, which will be a chain wide, is being formed by the trustees, but will be later handed over to the Rangiora Borough Council to maintain. It is understood that the work of cutting the road through the block will take about another four weeks to complete. Rainfall for September A total of 2.59 inches of rain was recorded at Rangiora for September, compared with 1.68 inches for the corresponding month last year. The average rainfall for September during the last 14 years has been 2.26 inches. The atmosphere was humid. 1 early in the morning, following several i days of north-westerly weather. The wind later changed to the south. Unemployment Committee The executive of the Rangiora Unemployment Committee met yesterday, the Mayor (Mr W. A. Rowse) presiding. Also present: Messrs C. S. Avers J. R. Wilkinson. G. E. H. Davis (certifying officer), and 11. M. Chappell (secretary). The Waimakariri-Ashloy Water aup- ; plv Board wrote asking permission still to employ men at present engaged under the No. 5 unemployment j scheme. It was decided to forward to j the Unemployment Board pointing out that the work was developmental and recommending thai the men be permitted to continue. Registrations from one two-day man, ( one four-day man. and one man under I scheme No. 4a were received. < The secretary reported having received a complaint that a worker cmpl'oved In- a local body was not making" up time lost through wet weather for which he had been oakl. The matter was left to the secretary to investigate. It was decided to investigate the position of a man receiving relief work, who was employing a man on his property. An application for a worker under thejMo. 4A scheme and an application for an extension of the period of employment of a worker under the same scheme were approved.
HAMMER SPRINGS A meeting of the Anglican Ladies' Guild wa» held in the Church House. Mrs H. D. Muir presiding. It was deeided to hold a bring and buy in the Hanmer Hall on the afternoon oT October 10. followed by a social in the evening. Stall-holders were appointed and numerous oilers of goods were gratefully accepted. Slipper was provided by Me:.dame.s Mansfield. Muir, and Farrow. The Haniner Springs Volunteer Fire Brigade held their annual fancy dress ball in the Hanmer Hall. There was a good attendance, and an enjoyable evening was spent. The prizes for costumes and dances were as follows: Most original, Miss E. Raynor (Mother Goose), Mr G. Gavin (Hitler); most humorous, Miss Rutherford, Miss Penney (Nigger Minstrels); specials, Miss J. Reader (Lord Fauntleroy). Mr B. Burns (Nurse); best dressed, Miss Mather (Christmas Tree;, Mr R. Herdman (Question Mark): lucky spot. Miss J. Argelin and Mr B. Brndshaw; balloon dance. Miss B. Mahcr and Mr Joyce; statue waltz. Mr and Mrs A. Manning. The judges were Mrs Neilson I'Hnnmei - Springs), Mrs E. L. Waitham (Christchurch), and Miss I. Johnson (Christchurch). The music was played by the New Collegian'; Band from Christrhurch. 'Extra*; were nlavod by Miss Mather. Miss Day, and Mr B. Bradshaw. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs F. Malaquin and L. Anderson.
WAIAU Messrs R. Gibson (Kaikoura) and J. Hannifin (Christchurch) have been transferred to the staff of the Waiau Post Office. Mr Hannilin replaces Mr J. W. Cooper, who has been transferred to Christchurch. Mr C. Johnston i.-, at present on annual leave. A new telephone switchboard has been installed in the Waiau exchange. The final shoot of the Miniature Rifle Club was held on Saturday, when a women's and men's combined team shoot was held. Miss E. Moore, K. Dunbar, and J. Duncan were the winning team, scoring 200 points out of the possible of 210. Second prize was won by Mrs Wall, W Anderson, and A. McClelland, they scoring 194 points. Miss E. Moore scored a possible (70), the first to be scored since the Ladies' Club was formed. Simper was provided by Mrs K. Croft, wife of the captain. A presentation of a hearthrug was made to Mr and Mrs Read, who were recently married. The windup dance is to be held on November 2 when trophies won during the season will be presented. A team of shooters will visit Kaikoura next week-end. HAWARDEN Mrs F. Mason, assisted by Mesdames G. D. Scott and A. Webb and Misses Elsie Mason and Mildred Wright, were hostesses at a delightful "cabin" party in honour of Mrs C. L. Suridge, who leaves next week to reside in Melbourne. Each guest brought for the guest of honour a gift for use on the voyage, and Mrs F. Mason presented Mrs Suridge with a basket of anemones. Competitions wcr.> won by Mrs C. MeKeegan and Miss Mary liuckie. COOPER'S CREEK There was a fair attendance at the fortnightly euchre and dance held in the Cooper's Creek hal! last Wednesday evening. The winners were:— Women, Miss I. Burrows 1, Miss D. Marsh 2. Mrs E. Fantham 3; men, Messrs R. Bowman 1, H. Harper 2, S. Rossiter 3. Music for the dances was played by Mrs R. Southgate, and extras by Mrs R. Marsh and Miss G. Bonisch. The Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Mr and Mrs C. E. Brown and Miss V. Fenwick and Mr R. Taylor. Mr Southgate was master of ceremonies.
OXFORD The rainfall for September was 3.43 inches, falling on nine days, compared with 2.10 inches, falling on eight days, for the corresponding month last year. The average for September for the last 24 years is 3.37 inches. The highest record for September during that period was 7.40 inches in 1917, and the lowest 1.21 inches, in 1927. The amount registered since the beginning of the year is 30.44 inches, compared \vith 16.54 inches for the corresponding period last year.
LOBURN The Loburn Football Club held a very successful dance recently. Music was played by Miss Brady's orchestra, extras being played by Miss P. Henry and Mr Les. Saxton. Novelty dances were won by Miss Croft and Mr J. Hutchinson. The hall was prettily decorated with multi-coloured streamers and wattle and the supper tables with bowls of spring flowers. The North Loburn Hall Committee held a very successful dance in the North Loburn Hall. Music was played by Miss Fitzgibbon, Messrs T. Joyce and J. Oxley, and extras by Miss Galletly and Mr J. Montgomery. Mr L. Brocherie was master of ceremonies. r-Tovelty dances were won by Miss L. Bennett and Mr R. Feather, Miss J. Montgomery and Mr D. Crooks. When the Loburn Tennis Club held its opening day there was a fair i attendance. The nor'-west weather ! made play rather unpleasant. In the ' evening a dance was held in the CoroI nation Hall, with cards for nondancers, the prize winners being Mrs M. Fitzgibbon and Mr J. Gibson. A novelty dance was won by Miss Dawson and Mr Thompson. Mr J. Robertson was master of ceremonies.
BROOMFIELD An enjoyable dance held by the school committee attracted a fair attendance. Music was played by Miss <\gnes Fitzpalrick, of Balcairn, and an extra by Miss Dorothy Webb. Mr A. Harrison was master of ceremonies. Two Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Miss Mary Sheesby and Mr T. Wilson and Mr and Mrs C. Croft. SPItINGSTON The usual meeting of the Sunshine Ciub was held in the public hall- Mrs E. L. Neale presided over a good attendance of members. A competition for the best papier mache article was won by Miss E. Bailey (seniors) and Miss M. Everest (juniors).
HORNBY J The monthly meeting of the Hornby branch of the Mothers' Union was held in the parish hall. Mrs Jones presided over a large attendance. It was arranged that Mrs Blakernore should represent the Hornby branch at the committee meeting at Christchurch on October 19. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relations of Mr McTeigue. A very interesting talk was given by Mrs Hendrie. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. Whale, Bashford, and J. Marsden. The Hornby Schol Committee held a successful social evening. Winners of competitions were Mesdames E. Joyce, N. Davis, Mr C. Meale, and Mr F. E. O'Flyrm. Members of the Loyal Orange Lodge held their weekly dance in the Hornby Orange Hall. Supper was served by members of the ladies' and men's lodge. Music for dancing was played by the Arcadians orchestra. j A parade of members of the Riccar- j ton Rorhabite- Juvenile and Adult f Lodges took place at St. David's Pros- | byterian Church, Hornby. Mr R. Brown conducted the service. Duets were sung by Messrs W. Little and ■T. Wilson; a solo by Mr Crawford Little: 3 trio bv Messrs T. Wilson, I W. Little, and Crawford Little. The lesson for the evening was read byi members of the lodge. Miss F. Mackiej wan organist. At the monthly meeting of the! Hornby branch of the Plunket Society, Mrs Gundersen presided. YALDHURST At the monthly meeting of the Yaldhurst School Committee, Mr C. Nl Anderson presided. The grounds committee reported that all fences had been cut and the main entrance gales repaired. The Yaldhurst Tennis Club opened its season in fine weather. In the absence of the president, Mr R. W. Hawke, M.P., Mr T. A. Guy. club captain, officially opened the season.
SPRINGBANK The weather report for September showed that rain fell at Springbank on eight days, the heaviest falls being on September 25 and 2(i, when 1.25 inches were recorded. The rainfall for the month was 2.23 inches; for the last 12 months it was 22.92 inches. The total rainfall for the year to date at Springbank is 18.03 incite.-:. HORORATA Observations on the weatluer taken by Mr E. Jekyll, Terrace Station, Hororata, for September slvow that rain fell on 12 days, the heaviest fall being 94 points, on September 25. The rainfall for the month was inches. compared with 1.48 inches for September. 1933. The rainfall to the end of September was 31.92 inches, compared with 14.59 inches for the same period last year. Thirteen frosts were recorded in September, the most severe being on September 3 and 4, both being 10 degrees. Siow fell on three days. A dance, organised by the Anglican Church Ladies' Sewing Guild, was held in the Hororata Hall. The music was played by Miss H. Maffey (piano i and Mr R. Felton, and Mr S. Gibson was master "31 ceremonies. • AKAROA At the thirty-ninth annual meeting i of the Akaroa Domain Tennis Club Mr I i\ R. E. Davis presided over a good j attendance of members. The balancesheet showed a credit of £33 0s 7d. Three resignations were received, and one new member wras elected. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr F. R. E. Davis; vice-pre-sidents, Misses F. Jenkins and R. Nnrbey, Messrs F. Brodherie, E. Longden, A. R. Haylock, A. Westlake; executive, committee, Mrs M. F. Richardson, Miss C. Narbey, and Mr E. E.
