TRAMWAY BOARD

I YESTERDAY'S MEETING The Christchurcb Tramway Board met yesterday. There were present:— Mr J. K. Archer (chairman), Mrs E. R. McCombs, M.P.. Messrs E. J. Howard, M.P., J. Mathison. G. Manning, C. E. Jones, W. J. Walter, E. Parlane, and G. T. Thurston. The report of the works and traffic committee stated that there had been 18 accidents involving the public during the month. There were nine collisions with motor-cars, one with a truck, two with cyclists, and one with a pedestrian. One accident arose from a passenger alighting from a car in motion, and one from a passenger falling while alighting from a stationary car. Three were classed as "miscellaneous." The order-in-council authorising the board to discontinue the Richmond tram service had, after a long delay, now been received from the Government and an order for necessary overhead equipment had been placed. During the last stages of correspondence with the Government in this matter much assistance was given by Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., deputy-chairman. The committee was meeting the request of the Tramway Union for a cap of different shape for traffic men. The new cap would be better ventilated and have a better appearance.

The St. John Ambulance Association staff had petitioned the board for a tram stop in Victoria street and in Colombo street, at Peterborough street and for a bus slop at Peterborough street also. This change would, if granted, affect the existing adjacent stops, unless the number of stops was to be increased. The matter was being closely investigated. Where apprentices attend night schools or have to work on Friday nights, arrangements had been made for the use of the apprentice ticket to be extended to cover these times. Commenting on the report Mr Thurston said that the extension of the use of apprentice tickets would be greatly appreciated by workers. The report was adopted. It was decided that a deputation from the Richmond Burgesses' Association, asking that some of the Richmond trolley-bus trips should go through to North Beach, be received at the meeting of the works and traffic committee on Monday next.
