FIRSTS
A reader of "The Press Junior"' who is a grand-daughter of the late George Edward Mason, has written to say that her grandfather brought the first merino sheep to Canterbury in 1851. He brought over 12 rams and four ewes from Australia in that year. He and Mrs Mason settled north of the Waipara flat—they were the first white people to live there and for three years Mrs Mason was the only white woman in the district. Mr Mason built his first house at "Horsley Down" which he so named after his birthplace, Horsley Court, Gloucestershire, England. Information of this kind is welcomed from all readers of "The Press Junior." Zoe Aldridge, Waiau, sent in the following questions for the "Firsts" section: When was the first Lucifer match made? Who was the first to talk across the Atlantic without wires, and in what year? When was the first shipment of frozen-meat sent from New Zealand?
