SLIGHT EARTHQUAKE
♦ THREE SURFACE SIIOCKS
Three slight shocks of earthquake were recorded on seismograph records which were developed at the Magnetic Observatory yesterday. The first and largest shock, which was felt in several parts of the city, and described as a sharp bump, occurred at 6.33 pjm~ there was a smaller one a few secon® before 6.53 p.m., and another at B.o' P Records at the observatory show that the shock was very shallow, ana it did not register on the vertical component of the seismograph. The origin was quite close to Christchurca and north of the observatory. Mr H. F. Baird, who took the records, said that the shallow origin of the shock was a reassuring feature; had it beta at all deep the effect would have been much more widely felt. The. first shock alarmed many families in ths northern part of the city. One man saw his chimney sway, but in many houses the jar was not enough to move hanging lamps. Panelled walls and floors creaked, and in Papanui, near Bligh's road, houses were given a slight wrench.
