Sir R Heaton Rhodes was elected president of the Royal Life-Saving Society at the annual meeting last night.

Mr Henry Holland, M.P., was reelected patron and Mr H. J. Otley president, of the Elmwood Tennis Club at its annual meeting last night.

Mr P R. Climic left for Wellington last night to attend a meeting of the Unemployment Board, of which he is a member. He expects to return towards the end of the week.

Mr F. W. Hobbs was last evening elected 'president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, in succession to Mr A. F. Wright. Mr L. G. K. Steven was elected vice-presi-dent.

Mr C. E. Hoy was re-elected president of the Canterbury and Westland branch of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand at the annual meeting last night of the branch.

Mr W. C. Colee, recently elected to the Canterbury University College Council, was welcomed by the council at its meeting yesterday afternoon when he took his seat for the first time.

A motion thanking Dr. J. Guthrie. w.i'O has resigned from membership, for his services to the club, was carried at the annual meeting of the tennis section of the United Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club last evening.

The death of Mr D. F. Coulter, a former committee man, club captain, and life member of the East Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club, is recorded with regret in the annual report of the club, to be presented to members at the annual meeting on October 2.

Sympathy with the relatives of Mr M. B. Smith, a former member of the executive of the Cheviot subbranch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, who was drowned in the Waiau river recently, was carried at a meeting of the executive of the Christchurch branch of the association last evening.

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr W. Ballantyne and Mr Walcot Wood was carried at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last evening. Mr Ballantyne was a member of the chamber for 38 years. Mr Wood was a member from 1894 to 1903. and was closely associated after that with firms which were members. The death of Mr J. F. Tickell, the curator of Deans Bush, was referred to at a meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council last evening, and a motion of condolence was passed with the family.

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr J. J. Dougall, was passed at the meeting of the Canterbury University College Council yesterday afternoon. Mr Dougall was a member of the council at tho time of his death. The chairman of the council, Mr C. T. Aschman. mentioned that during the last 12 months four members of the council had died—Messrs J. R. Montgomery, W. M. Hamilton, L. B. Wood, and J. J. Dougall.

The New Zealand Cycling Federation at its meeting last evening passed a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr John Kennedy, who was its chairman from its inception several years ago. The motion incorporated an appreciation of Mr Kennedy's service to the sport of cycling and to the corhmunity as a whole. The deputy-chairman, Mr W. J. Walter, said that Mr Kennedy had been one of the prime movers in the establishment of the federation. He was appointed a delegate from the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling, and Axemen's Union.
