SUMMER SPORTS I I j The various summer sports bodies j are at present showing signs of activ- i ity, and several will hold their annual \ meetings this month. The Sumner Tennis Club's meeting will be held next Thursday, while the meetings of the Redclirfs Tennis Club, the Sumner Athletic Club, and the Sumner-ReddifTs Rowing Club will also bo held shortly, on dater yet to ba fixed. A New Lamp A new light is being erected at the foot of the Monck's Spur road. A stone pedestal is being constructed in the centre of the triangular convergence of the hill road with the main road, and when completed will be surmounted with a standard lamp. RedclifTs School Except for a small amount of tarring of paths and a playing area at the back of the Redcliffs School, the principal work connected with the ground improvement scheme has now been completed. Rugby Football The Sumner Club's sixth grade team has had a very successful season, and at present is first equal with Sydenham, which it will play to-day at Lancaster Park south, at 1 p.m. The team will be chosen from the following: Bromley (2), Wilson <2), Stevens (2), Kite, Malley, Sarelius, Noonan, Minogue, Williams, Tami, Chitty, Cobeldick, Crawshaw, Haase. St. John's Literary Society This week's meeting of the St. John's Literary Society, Redcliffs, took the form of a devotional evening, when the Rev. T. J. Wallis spoke of j the parable of the unjust ruler. BeI fore the meeting Mr Wallis met some of the young people, whom he prepared for church membership. Next week the Rev. Mr Scriven will give a lantern lecture in aid of the Methodist Home Missions. His subject will be: "New Guinea and the Surrounding Islands." The weekly meetings of the society will be carried on until September 27, when a concluding banquet will bo held. Mount Pleasant Activities A great deal of interest is being shown in the improvements at present being effected at the foot of St. Andrew's Hill, alongside the main road. Tt is not generally known that this area is actually a legal road, which joins the main road through the tennis courts and includes a portion of the hill on the southwest side. It has never been the intention of the county council to build a road there, however, and the problem arose as to what should be done with this untidy area. In co-operation with the owners of nearby properties, a beautifying scheme has been drawn up, and it if. now intended to plant native trees inside the post and wire fences which have been erected there. It will al.-o be noticed that in several places along the boundary line stone piers have been built, and these mark the line of a stone wall, which will ultimately join them. It is also the intention of the owner of the sections near the old stone crusher to plant the hillside with native trees. Good Templars Ero. L. Clark, Chief Templar, presided over the weekly meeting of the Sumner Pride Lodge of Juvenile Lodge Good Templars. Bro. Ford reported that no information had been received regarding the inter-lodge competitions, but that the teams should hold themselves in readiness in case of a challenge. Reporting on the sports meeting, Bro. Ford stated that the Ashburton representatives would not be able to come. The social part of the meeting was devoted to games. Sister Ford won the girls' competition, and Bro. C. Ford the boys'. Next week a word-building competition will be held and Bro. W. L. Clark, the assistant superintendent of junior works. will be in charge.
