THE POPULATION OF CHRISTCHURCH
'-''.' 'ItlS IDITOtt 0? TJJK I'RISi. Sir,—ln "The Press'' of Wednesday August 29, there is a tabulated statement by Mr Trathen, of Nelson, to the effect that Christchurch increased its population during the live years from 1027 to 1932 by only 5 per cent. According to the local directory of 1020 the population was 115,350 and in 1932, 127.200. an increase of more lhan 10 per cent, for the si:; vears. 1 have nut the figures for 1927 by me. but it is reasonable to assume the five years' increase would still be about 10 per cent. The "Statesman's Year Book" for 1934 credits Christchurch •with 130,100 at the present, time. Natives of a town are perhaps a little tender on the subject of its progres? and reputation for healthy growth.— Yours, etc., f'.G. August 31, 193-J.
