PRICES OF TROPICAL FRUITS
♦ Ql ESTION IN THE HOUSE [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.J WELLINGTON, August 29. The handling and retail costs of tropical fruits at Christchurch and Timaru were alleged to be excessive by Mr Clyde Can* (Lab., Timaru) in the House of Representatives to-day. He gave notice to ask the Minister for Industries and Commerce if he would institute an enquiry into the present rates, in view of the following facts: Satnoan bananas were delivered in Christchurch at lis Cd a case. The price to retailers was £ 1 a case as a minimum. Australian oranges were delivered at 7s Gd a case, plus freight 2s 6d, but the price to retailers was 31s 6d and 23s Gd a case. The retailers' price landed in Timaru was 23s 6d, plus Is Gd freight. A case of 360 San Francisco lemons cost a retailer £4 12s Gd. Mr Carr added that although the embargo had been lifted from oranges, it had remained on lemons, so that invalids and others were penalised accordingly.
