ASSAULT CHARGE

MAN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL IMESS ASSOCIATION IELKQU/.l!.! THAMES, August 29. Rakei (Jimmy) Akc, aged 26, was committed for trial at Auckland by the magistrate (Mr F. W. Platts) on a charge of assault with intent to commit a serious offence on a widow, aged 77, on the evening of August 11. The hearing of the evidence occupied all yesterday afternoon. A doctor and the police gave evidence that the accused was in a drunken stupor shortly after his arrest, and did not remember anything that happened. Counsel for the defence (Mr C. J. Garland) made an application to have the charge reduced to common assault, but the magistrate thought the court had no power to do so with such a serious charge. The accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for trial, the magistrate reserving his decision regarding bail for a fortnight, during which Ake will be held in custody at Thames.
