SWIMMING HINTS
Learning Breaststroke
In learning breaststroke you can do the following drill at home, preferably before a mirror. Stand at attention, with both arms stretching to the front and parallel with the ground. The palms should be facing downwards, and slightly outward. The chin should be brought down to a level with the upper arms, and the thumbs should be touching. The movements are to be divided into four, as follows:—(1) Breathe out, but do not move the arms; (2) move the arms out and down until they make an angle of a little more than 90 degrees, and the hands are about a foot lower than they were when you began the movement; (3) lift the head and inhale, moving the hands up to the front of the chin, with the thumbs together and the elbows close to the body; (4) lower the head and shoot the hands forward. You are now back to the original position. The pull should take longer than any of the other movements. Next week the lep movements will be described. Arthur Mee Mr Arthur Mee, the famous editor of "My Magazine" writing in "an odd moment of a lovely sunny day by the Thames" wrote a message that should be passed on to all the children who have taken delight in his wonderful books; Mr Mee, one of the world's best lovers of children, is growingold. Now he says: "Let us be cheerful, let us carry on: for nothing ever yet has conquered right, and nothing ever yet has endured if it was wrong." Climbing Fishes When the Waitaki Dam is completed and the lake is full, visitors will be given the chance of seeing fishes climbing a specially constructed ladder from the level of the river-bed on the lower side of the dam to the high water level on the upper or lake side. Water will flow down the ladder continually, and the fishes are expected to flop their way up from the muddied stoney bed of the river to the desirable deep waters of the lake and the spawning grounds in the upper reaches of the river.
