The Australian cyclist, Hubert Opperman, is a passenger by the Rangitata, and will join the Wanganella tomorrow for Australia, to which he is returning with his wife after a visit to England and the Continent. Opperman will take part in the Centenary race at Melbourne. While in Britain he broke five records, three of them in the Land's End to John o' Groats event. He expresses great admiration for the French riders and flic wonderful manner in which cycling is appreciated in France. NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP !!'K*SS. H3SOCUTIOK TELBGRAM.I HAWERA, August 29. The North Island Road Cycle Championship on a 62 miles course, at Hawera to-day, was won by C. Hawkins, New Plymouth, who finished fifth with the fastest time of 2hrs 50min 15sec. The race was run in ideal weather over tar-sealed roads. There were 60 competitors, and 43 finished. The trophies were of the value of £llO, and the first prize was worth £45.
