WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL

♦ The chairman <Cr. H. B. S. Johnstone) presided at the monthly meeting of the Waimate County Council. Also present were Councillors A. S. Elworthy, H. M. Whatman, R. Sinclair, J. Bitchcner, M.P., J. .1. Dickson, VV. Lindsay, N. A. Rattray, and A. N. Hayes. The finance committee reported that the balance at the bank in August, 19:14, was credit £1344 15s 7d (in August, 193:!. debit £1136 3s fid), and the accounts preserved totalled £IBBS 13:: (id. The receipts since the last I meeting amounted to £lslß 5s 3d. In the Lower Waihao water-race account the balance at. the bank in August, | 1934, was credit £331 15s 6d (in Au-i KU.-t, 1933, credit £2(31 17s 9d>. Messrs Boland and Knell advi.-ed ; 'hat Mr A. K. Shanks was making ap-j plication for a new license for a pas-j senger service between Waimate and Timaru, and asked whether it would | be possible for someone to represent | the council at the hearing before the No, 8 'Licensing Authority. The council considered the ea-e a deserving one. and Cr. Lindsay and the county clerk were appointed to repress" nt the council. It wtis decided to make application io the Loans Board for sanction to divert the balance of the loan money-;, amounting to £Bl 2s lOd. for erecting a bridge over Deep creek. llakataramea. After a long discussion. Cr. Lindsay's motion: "That legal steps be taken to abolish the riding accounts, and that the alteration take effect as from April 1, 1985." was carried, Cr. A. N. Hayes dissenting on the grounds that his riding * [fakatarameai would suffer unduly. Cr. Hattrav reported that two areas. of a total of three acres and a half had been selected for tree planting, and it had also been found that several areas at present let at peppercorn rentals were eminently suitable for future use. The chairman said that a satisfactory start had been made. There was now an energetic committee, and it was hoped to do some tree planting every year.
