CANDIDATES FOR NEXT ELECTION
♦ rDOUGLAS CREDIT ADVOCATES AS INDEPENDENTS Several members of the DouglM Social Credit Movement will contest the next parliamentary election, among them Mr D. C. Davie, originator of the movement in Canterbury. They will stand not as a Douglas Credit party, but as independents. Mr Davie will contest the Hurunui seat against the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes), and as well as candidates in a few parts of the South Island, there will be several in the North. A message from London yesterday quoted a statement made by the ODserver," that Major Douglas's policy of social credit had not attracted a large academic or proletarian following in England, and that readers naa been puzzled by the news thai 4U Douglas Credit candidates would contest the Australian elections. Mr Davie said that the man-in-the-streei in England did not freely discuss the Douglas Social Credit scheme as New Zealariders. Australians, and Canadians did, and he considered that this accounted for the surprise expressed in England. The movement in Engiana was a small one. but it had an extremely influential following. . Mr Davie will contest the Hurunui seat as a strong advocate for monetary reform. He was a farmer m the waikari valley for some years, and is wen known in the North Canterbury district, where he has delivered a number of lectures on Douglas aociai Credit.
