CONTROL OF HERRING INDUSTRY
4> BRITISH SUGGESTION GOVERN.'.., NT CONTRimTION ADVISED ',}■.,' C'i LMI OFFICIAL WIKLI.K.S.S.) (Received August 22, 7.10 p.m.) RUGBY, August 21. The reorganisation and control of the British herring industry is unanimously recommended in the first report of the Sea Fish Commission. It is proposed that a Herring Board be set up to create a framework of organisation within the herring industry, resting upon a system of licensing. Herring fishermen, salesmen, curers, and kippe'rers would all require to be licensed. The commission advises the Government to make a grant of £50,000 to the board as a contribution towards the problem of redundancy in the herring fleet by the purchase of older boats for scrapping, and recommends a further grant of £125,000 for the initial establishment expenses, to cover administration charges for at least two years, for marketing services, and for other purposes. A publicity campaign to encourage the consumption of herrings, both fresh and cured, is suggested.
