THE SMOKE NUISANCE
TO THE EDITOR Oi' THE VHEIS. Sir,—ln your issue of August 16 I note that an earnest effort is being made by the Sunlight League to abate the smoke nuisance in the city. I feel that the citizens of Christchurch are deeply indebted to the league for the admirable work that is being done in the interests of health. I should like to point out that this same deadly scourge is also going on daily in the thickly populated suburbs, where the women and children suffer from the burning of dirty rubbish. It is true that many residents see that rubbish is reasonably dry, so that when set alight, m a favourable wind, it disappears quickly, and consequently the neighbours are not blinded "with smoke, soot, and dirt. In some cases I do not think that neighbours realise the distress and damage to health caused by these fires, but I know of other cases where some residents may bo unfortunate in living in proximity to boorish and cantankerous individuals, who light up wet heaps of dirty rubbish, with the wind in a direction, carrying smoke and soot upon their neighbours, for hours at a time. Such distress and damage to health should not be tolerated in a civilised country, and I trust that the Sunlight League will not rest until the Citv Council and Health Department take action against such offenders, and so end these smouldering stink heaps, which are undermining the health of the community.—Yours, etc., ' ANTI-SMOKE FIEND, August 19, 1934.
