AUCTIONS. A. MATSON AND CO BODY -LINE" ODY-LINE" The world of Sport and the world of Industry seem to be involved and divided in acute discussion on the subject of "Body-line." Actually the sports controversy "gets down" to deeper things than bowling does. It involves the very spirit in which the game is played. "PLAYING THE GAME" does really mean something, and in our quotations for SEEES, FENCING MATERIAL, and GENERAL FARMERS' SUPPLIES we are in a position, owing to our low overhead, to remember that the man who is dealing with us is entitled to buy on the lowest market and sell on the dearest. You should face the fact that if you regularly spend all you earn, you will be no better off in ten years' time than you are now. REGULAR SAVING, on the other hand, means increased COMFORT and HAPPINESS in store. YOU HAVE OFTEN READ OUR ANNOUNCEMENTS, HAVE YOU SATISFIED YOUR CURIOSITY BY PAYING A VISIT TO OUR OFFICE? H. MATSON & CO.—SALESMEN—I 47 CASHEL ST., CHRISTCHURCH. "VIRULENT DISEASE FOR RABBITS." WILL SCIENCE WIN; INTERESTING DISCOVERY REPORTED. Are the scientists about to perfect a discovery that will wipe out the rabbits? This old question is revived by a report received by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. Scepticism will probably be general for the time being, but—you never know! According to a report received by the C.S.I.R. colonies of rabbits are maintained in many research institutions for medical and bacteriological investigations.. Consternation was caused in some English • laboratories when a virulent disease killed their rabbits almost overnight. Sir Charles Martin, formerly professor at Melbourne and other Australian Universities, and later the Chief of the Division of Animal Nutrition in Australia, saw the possibilities of the applications of such a disease to the Australian rabbit pest, provided that it was sufficiently sudden in its action to prevent rabbits developing an immunity to it and that it would not attack domestic or indigenous animals.
FROM BRAZIL. For a year Sir Charles Martin has been quietly investigating the disease at the Cambridge Physiological Laboratory, assisted by Dr. Lionel Bull, who will return to Australia next year to take charge of the division of animal health for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. The disease originated in Brazil and ■was introduced to the English rabbit colonies by accident. Sir Charles Martin's experiments are not complete, but as far as they go they indicate that the disease is caused by a virus and not.by bacteria, that it is specific to rabbits and is harmless to even such a close relative of the rabbit as the hare, and that it is so acute in infected rabbits that there is little likelihood of an.immunity developing. INTERESTING. The chief executive officer of the council (Dr. A. C. D. Rivett) said that Australian jubilation at the discovery would be premature. There must be further investigation in Britain before the introduction of the virus to an eastern laboratory would be justified, even if that were so. The utmost caution must be exercised in field tests before the disease could be released. Experiments would have to be conducted on an island to determine whether the virus would exterminate rabbits living in natural surroundings and its harmlessness to every other form of life, which have to be established conclusively before its dissemination on the mainland would be justified. Professor RiVett is not prepared to commit himself beyond the statement that the discovery is "interesting." DRAUGHT STALLION FOR PRIVATE SALE. WE CAN OFFER A GOOD, USEFUL COLT BY "BOLD RECORD."
