KAIKOURA NEWS

* Mr F. Langbein (District Engineer), and Mr A. W. Barker (Public Works Overseer) were busy during the latter end .of last week, making surveys of Stoncy, Glen Colwyn, Ruby, Windy, and Dip creeks, with a view to future bridge construction in accordance with the estimates. The four last-named streams are south of the Conway bridge, and have given motorists a good deal of trouble following heavy rains. The first-named creek is about six miles south of Kaikoura. At Mrs B. Mackle's paddock on Friday a team of basketball players from the Convent beat the Kincaid School team by 14 goals to 4. At football the Convent School team was also successful, winning by 14 points to 0. Tries were scored by J. Adair, J. Laugesen, G. Stack, and J, Miles, the former converting one try. Mr Hay-was referee. Mrs Victor Smith (West Coast) it' spending a holiday in Kaikoura with her mother, Mrs B. Mackle. Notwithstarfding unfavourable weather there was a large audience at the Drill Hall, when the combined schools of the district gave a concert in aid of the dental clinic fund. The programme was bright and amusing. The Strahl Orchestra played instrumental items, recitations were given by the Convent,' Suburban, and Town schools' Town junior pupils; poi dances by the town junior pupils; poi dances by the Mangamaunu School pupils; folk songs by the Hapuku School pupils; two Maori songs by Mangamaunu pupils; musical drill exercises by the senior pupils of the Town school. Miss N. Burland and Mr W. E. Richardson each sang two songs and Miss Nellie Pluck danced an Irish jig. Miss E. Mackle played the accompaniments for the songs. Mrs W. Poharama, the music for the poi ! dances, and Mr F. S. H. Warner for the folk songs and drill exercises. About £2O was Raised.
