FIELD TRIAL
CANTERBURY GUN DOG CLUB THREE CLASSES DECIDED The Canterbury Gug Dog Club held its last trial of the season at Brookelands during the week-end. Three " classes were decided, puppy, limit, and open, the entries being three, four, and seven respectively. The conditions governing the trial were different from those of previous trials, two and three dogs being worked together. The trial was arranged and judged by the secretary, Mr A. E. Seeker, with Mr Knowles as judge's steward. Mr A. Dawson was captain and Mr P. Wilson was in charge of the traps. The winners were:— OPEN CLASS Mr D. Mcßae's Springer Hope of Cornwall .. .. .. 1 Mr W. R. N. Irwin's Springer Paddy .. .. .. 2 Mr C. V. Mcßeath's Labrador ch. Pompey .. ■ .. .. 3 LIMIT CLASS Mrs J. Grigg's Labrador Julia .. 1 Mrs Mcßae's Springer Lady Cornwall .. .. ..2 PUPPY CLASS Mrs Cooper's Springer Sandhurst Solitaire .. .. .. 1 Mrs J. Grigg's Labrador Julia .. 2 In the open class Mr Irwin's Paddy was under good control, but was in- ■ clined to work wide. Mr F. Truscott's Pleasant Don was under good control at heel, but broke to another competitor's bird. Retrieved well to hand. Mrs Cooper's Sandhurst Solitaire is particularly steady to game and shot, i but lacks experience in ranging. Mr T. Bradshaw's Cocker Burnley Gunner was fairly steady to shot and quite a good ranger, but his retrieving was not up to standard, delivery being very poor. Mr C. V. Mcßeath's Labrador Ce- ' lerity of Clifton was very steady, under good control, and an excellent retriever. In the final he was too slow in finding. Mr D. Mcßae's Springer Hope of Cornwall was fast, used his nose well, and was under fair control. On two occasions he had to be checked, but he did his work in an experienced manner. Mr C. V. Mcßeath's Labrador ch. Pompey did not range as well as the Spaniels, and was slow in finding. Once having found he was difficult to fault, being absolutely steady to game and shot and a good retriever. In the limit class Mrs J. Grigg's Labrador was outstanding, having a good nose and plenty of dash. He was fairly steady to game and shot, but needed more experience in picking up game, being probably too tender in the mouth. Mrs Mcßae's Springer Lady Cornwall could not be relied on to sit to game or shot. She was a very keen worker, but was not under control. Retrieved well. Mr Henry Brake's Cocker Don would range well if properly trained. Lacked control and required more experience in retrieving. Mr McFadden's Retriever Don did not range well and failed to acknowledge shot. Under quite good control at heel and a good retriever. The punpy class was won by Mrs Cooper's Springer Sandhurst Solitaire on steadiness to game and shot, the second dog, Julia, breaking to her bird. Except for this mistake these two dogs were difficult to separate. The prizes were presented bv Mr H. Ayer<? and thanks were tendered to Mr Snencer nnd Mr Coull for the use of their properties.
