NEW ZEALAND RIMU

I EXPORT TO AUSTRALIA j WEST COAST SAWMILLERS I FOSTER TRADEThe increased export of rimu timber to Australia from New Zealand was an outstanding feature of the improvement in the timber trade last year, and that increase has been credited largely to the relations fostered by a delegation representing West Coast sawmillers. Tho West Coast Sawmillers' Association, which arranged the delegation's visit, is doing all in its power to bring rimu, as a valuable soft wood in building, to the notice of Australians, and the latest development is the issue of an artistically designed pamphlet which will be distributed throughout Australia. The pamphlet explains the uses of rimu, its qualities, and the reasons why Australians should foster ; its importation. It was explained by representatives of the West Coast Sawmillers' Associu- ; tion yesterday that although Australia had the capacity to supply the world ! with hard woods—7,ooo,ooo feet of i that type was imported to New Zea- ! land from Australia last year—it had | onlv a limited supply of soft woods. '■ It was extremely fortunate that so complete an understanding had been reached between the-soft wood suppliers in New Zealand and those in Australia, as that had led to reciprocity. It was significant that in 1920 30,000,000 feet of rimu was exported to Australia, but in 1932 the figure was 2,000,000 feet only. It was anticipated, however, that this year j the export would reach 6,000,000 feet. Benefit from Empire Tariffs New Zealand was really benefiting by Australia's Empire tariffs because under them New Zculand received generous treatment, while high barriers were raised against America and European countries. The increase last year in the amount of New Zealand rimu used in Australia corresponded with the amount that importation of • soft woods from the Baltic declined. The pamphlet that the association has published, after explaining the origin of. and uses for, rimu, states !- that with the addition of rimu to its i own supplies of Queensland pine and cypress all Australia's requirements in soft woods for building purposes can be fully met. It also states that New Zealand is Australia's best customer for manufactured goods, and Australians can assist reciprocity between the Commonwealth and New Zealand by buying New Zealand rimu.
