+ BROOKSIDE Mrs F. S. Candy presided uver a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Brookside Women's Institute. The roll-call, quotations from Shakespeare, brought a good response. Mrs H. Schnelle judged a competition for the best jar of marmalade or lemon honey, awarding first and third prizes for marmalade to Mrs F. S. Candy, and second prize to Mrs Croy, the first for s lemon honey to Mrs C. C. S. Candy, ~ i, second to Mrs H. Gardiner, and third \4Y' to Mrs Bowden. Mrs Gardiner and ™ Miss D. Brooke demonstrated a variety of embroidery stitches, and also some finished specimens of work. Arrangements were made for the institutes birthday party. The hostesses were Mesdames Walker and Taylor, and Miss Hall. KOWAI-SEFTON . The mothly meeting of the KowaiSefton Women's Institute was held in the Presbyterian schoolroom. Mrs W. J. Stringer presided. Motions of sympathy were passed with the Hanna and the Boyce families, in their recent bereavements. A vote was taken as to the future place of meeting, and resulted in a small majority for the Anglican schoolroom. Mrs D. J. Boyce Kaye a pastry demonstration. The competition for the best jar of marmalade won by Mrs D. Lang, with Miss J. Jamieson second. The hostesses were Mesdames J. R. Cameron, G. Cooper, H. Cory, and the Misses Cnglingjon. and Dowds.
TISMfM,BTOiN The monthly meeting of the Templeton Women's Institute was held in I he Oddfellows' Hall, Mrs H. B. Kissel presiding over a good attendance. Arrangements were made fi>r a bring and buy stall to be held in the hall. The sub-committe" decided to hold a social evening in the hall, the proceeds to be in aid of the birthday celebration expenses. It was decided to hold the first birthday in October, and to hold a guessing competition for a cake, which will be drawn at the party. The competition was for the best decorated coat-hanger, the winners being Miss Kathleen Hinton 1, Mrs J. F. Wright 2. The hostesses' were Mesdames Henshaw, Hodgson, and Humphreys. THE I'EAKS The monthly meeting of The .Peaks Women's Institute was held in the hall. Mrs F. Quiglcy (vice-president) presided over a smaller attendance than usual.' The secretary (Mrs J. Quigley) reported that a good supply of second-hand clothing had "been received from members and others for the relief of distress. It was decided to hold a general meeting to make arrangements for the birthday party to be held early in September. A competition for the best fuji silk nightdress, hand-embroidered, was won by Mrs A. Cowie, with Mrs F. Quigley second, and Mrs A. Cowie and Mrs F Quigley (equal) third. Another competition for the best plate of puff pastry resulted as follows: Mrs D. Kennedy 1, Miss M. Hewett 2 and Mrs W N Hewett and Miss M. Hewett (equal) third. The hostesses were Mesdames J. COALGATE A successful hard-up social and dance was arranged by the Women's Institute in aid of its Xunds in the Masonic Hall. All those in costume look part in the grand march, after which the judge, Mrs B. Rutficrford, presented the prizes. The winners were Mrs Elliott and Mr Hobbs. The women's prize was given by Mrs Rutherford. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss K. McCaughan and Mr S. Watson. Community singing was led by Mr S. Watson. Humorous itemswere given by Mr Hobbs. Music was played by Mr Petitt, with extras by Mrs J. McCaughan and Miss Muriel Charles. Mr Calwell was master of ceremonies. Among those present. were Mr and Mrs Collings. Misses J. Charles, M. Charles, R. Calwell. D. Prestidge, K. McCaughan, M. Stewart. E. Weastell, Duncan (2) (Hawkins), Burns (Morven), Brown (Whitecliffs), M. McCaughan, P. McCaughan, and M. Faloon (Darfield). CAVE Miss Amyes presided at the meeting of the Cave Women's Institute. Invitations from the Fairlie and Pleasant Point Women's Institutes were received, and two members were appointed to attend each entertainment.
A prize given by Mrs Brown was presented to Miss Weavers, who gained most, points for I lie quarter's competit.ions, and (wo special prizes given by Miss Scott; for a knitted cardigan and a knitted jumper were won by Mrs Fitzgerald and Mrs Rich. A demonstration of the curing and dying of sheep, lamb, and rabbit skins was given by Mrs Hansen, who also gave all instructions for making the skins into gloves, slippers, and toy animals. and bad. on display some samples of her work. Mrs W. Little read the gardening notes for the month. Two songs were sung by Mrs Hansen. The winners of the monthly competitions were:—Six heaviest eggs: Miss Amycs 1, Mrs J. Little 2, Mrs Malthus and Miss Weavers (equal) 3. Cardigan: Mrs Fitzgerald 1, Miss Wisely 2, Mrs J. Little and Miss Weavers (equal) 3. Jumper: Mrs Rich 1, Miss Fairbanks 2. I3ulbs grown in fibre: Mrs W, Little 1, Miss- Weavers 2, Miss McPhcrson'3. RANWTIKA VALLEY The monthly meeting of the Rangitira Valley Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs G. McCullougb, Mrs R. Talbot presiding. An invitation from the Pleasant Point Women's Institute to attend its birthday dance was accepted. It was decided that the president and Mrs S. G. MeCullough should attend the next meeting of the Waitohi Women's Insti'iite to complete arrangements for the restoration of the Waitohi soldiers' memorial. A competition for a nut loaf resulted: Mrs Hartnett 1, Mrs Kennedy 2. For a light fruit cake. Mrs Hartnett was iirst and Mrs TaJbot second. Mesdames Green and Barker were hostesses for the afternoon tea.
(JLENTL'NNEL The monthly meeting of the Gicntunnel Women's Institute was held in the Public Hal), Glentunnel, Mrs L. A. Marshall presiding. Miss J. Barlow sang a solo, and the remainder of the afternoon was spent in community singing, competitions, and games. Mrs ■I. Rhodes and Miss I. Gilmour played the music. The competitions, for which Miss S. Harrison was judge, were won as follows: —Jar of marmalade, Mrs D. Boyes 1, Mrs A. Leeming 2, and Mrs W. J. Harrison 3; papier mache article, Mrs W. J. Harrison 1, Mrs G. D. Marsh 2, Miss I. Gilmour 3. In the monthly best bloom compelition, the results were:—Mrs A. Leeming 1. Miss J. Barlow 2, Mrs W. J. Harrison 3. Another competition was won by Mrs G. D. Marsh. The competition for the next month is an article knitted from not more than three ounces of wool. The hostesses were Misses M. Dickie and I. Hunt. UAWARDEN Mrs J. Doak presided over a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Hawarden's Women's Institute. The group delegate, Mrs Doak, reported that an exhibition of work of all kinds would be held in the Hawarden Hall in November. In a competition for a thrift article Mrs Burt was first and Mrs H. Inch second, and for bran biscuits Mrs Inch was first, Miss M. Wright second, and Mrs Burt third. Dr. Wood gave a health talk. The hostesses were Mesdames G. Ecroyd, R. Galletly, and Miss Mildred Wright.
SCAIUJILL The members of the Seargill-Motu-nau Women's Institute celebrated the third anniversary of their institute with a "back to childhood" dance in the Scargill Hall. There was a very good attendance. Prizes were given for what were considered by the judges to be the best "back to childhood" costumes, and these were awarded to Mrs H. Tindal], Mrs R. M. Gibb. Mrs W. Duckmanton. Messrs G. Brydon and C. Tomlinson. The costumes were judged by Mrs A. Turner and Mrs F. Roberts. The lucky spot waltz was won by Mr and Mrs W. Hitchcock, and the winners of the Monte Carlo were Mrs E. Gardner and Mr T. E. L. Roberts. Music was plaved by Mr C. Honey, with extras bv Mrs B. Coo, Mrs F.. Gardner, and Messrs G. Grcig and J. Drake. Mr J. Lambie was maslcr of ceremonies. The institute's birthday cake bore three candles, and was made by Mrs W. Fleming, and iced by Mrs H. Phillips iWaiknri). Mr Ainu Gardner, who was celebrating bis twrnty-lirst birthday, was congratulated by Mrs J. Preston, president of the institute, and others present. HAMPSTEAD The Hampstead Hall was tastefully decorated when the third birthday party of the Hampstead Women's Institute was held. There was an attendance of more than 200 members and friends. After the visitors had been welcomed by the president, Mrs W. J. Miller, the following programme was presented:—Solos, Miss Joyce Dunham, Mrs A. Home, Messrs W. Denley, and A. C. Wilson; elocutionary items, Miss I. Ede; club swinging, Miss Ngaire
Day; Irish jig. Miss Joyce Dcnlcy, skipping rope dance. Miss Melba Melvilfe; dance duo, Misses Melville and Denley; cornet solo, Mr T. Lee. A short play entitled "Mrs Jupp Obliges was presented by the following members of the play-reading circle: Mr? G. T. Clarke and Misses M. Olliver and D Tinker. Community singing was led by Mr A. C. Wilson. Accompaniments were played by Mrs A J. Clung, Miss M. Kelly, and Mr J. MacMillan. The birthday cake, which was baked by Mrs J. Tinker and iced by Mr W. Wakeham, was cut by the oldest member, Mrs J. Hunt, sen. Delegates were present from the following institutes:— Ashburton, Ashburton junior, Allenton, Ashton, Waterton, Fairton, Wakanui, and Tinwald. Greetings were received from Mrs F. Curtis. Mrs H. J. Constable, Mrs Leaver (Fiji), and Miss Watt. After supper dancing was held for an hour. Mr G. T. Clarke was master of ceremonies. Music for the dancing was played by Mi.ss M. Kelly, Messrs G. Kelly, and T. Lee. The hostesses were Mesdames F. Hose, W. Edmonstone. J. Cooke, J. Hawkey, Mather, J. Bruce,' and W. Wakeham. ALLANDALE At the monthly meeting of the Allendale Women's Institute, Mrs R. Wareing presided. Best wishes for a speedy recovery were expressed for Miss C. Crampton, who had been very ill for some time. It was decided to enter a team for the choir competition. Mrs Wareing expressed regret that Mrs L. Sadler was leaving the district, and presented her with a crystal vase. The competitions for the month were won as follows: Best worked buttonhole, made at the meeting, Mrs A. Hall 1, Mrs R. Braddick 2; best sultana cake, Mrs T. Crampton 1- and 2. The hostesses were Mesdames C. Isitt, W. Hammond, P.* Wareing, and Miss B. Wareing, ~
