Resident Honoured A resident of Sumner for many years who for some time has been confined to her house was honoured on Thursday afternoon by a visit from the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, ( who was accompanied by Lady Bledisloe. The visit was a gracious ; acknowledgment of a gift sent by this ; resident to Lady Bledisloe, who, in a . letter of thanks, indicated that should : the opportunity arise she would thank the donor in person. Thursday's visit was therefore the fulfilment of Lady Bledisioe's promise, and the resident j was left with a very deep impression of their Excellencies' kindly sympathy and interest. Forensic Club Mr Douglas Smith presided over this week's meeting of the Sumner Forensic Club, when the subject foi debate was "That the Legislative Council should be abolished." The principal speakers were Messrs T. Auton, J. S. Barr. J. A. Rhodes, and W. S. Burford. The affirmative considered that the institution of the Legislative Council was contrary to the principles of true .democracy in that its members were not elected by the people and therefore were not responsible to them. It was further contended that as a revisory chamber the council had out-; lived" its usefulness. „ For the negative side the functions of the council were outlined, and emphasis was laid upon the amount ot actual work done by it compared with that of the Lower House. It was further contended that the council acted as a check on hasty legislation and in doing so justified its existence. The Jack of party influence, allowing members to vote according to their convictions, was emphasised. . Next week Mr J- H. Thomas will be in the chair, and the subject will be "That a counsel is justified in defending a prisoner of whose guilt he is cognisant." The principal speakers will be Messrs J. A. Rhodes. 1). A. Literary Society On Thursday evening members of the St. John's Literary Society. Rede! ill's, met the Woolston Young People's Guild in a debate on the subject "That sport should he played on Sundays." Redclilfs, who took the anirmative, were represented by Miss Gwen Gee and Messrs Alan Primmer and Lloyd Ilolden, and the Woolston team comprised Miss D. Taylor and Messrs MeHarg and Falkingham. The judge, Mr Alan Gandell, commented on the arguments advanced by either side and awarded the debate to the Woolston team by seven points. Bridge Evening Jli order to raise funds for the relief of distress in the borough a badge party was held in the Cadcna Tearooms at Sumner on Thursday evening A strong committee, comprising Mr'and Mrs C. E. Claydon, Mesdamcs H. Y. Widdowson, W. H. Nicholson, A. J. Malley, H. G. Tombs, A. Templer, R. W. Gale, K. A. Brooke, W. S. Lee, and Misses E. Pender and N. The C.T. extended a welcome to Mrs Buttle, who was judge in a fancy costume parade. Bro. Ford presented the prizes to the winners, and announced that another parade would be held at a later date. Mrs Buttle gaVo a brief address and thanked the members for the welcome that had been accorded her.
