CHARITY EVENING
* MAYOR'S RELIEF FUND A charily performance given in the Regent Theatre on Thursday, under the patronage of Lord and Lady Bledisloe, to aid the Mayor's Relief of Distress Fund, was a complete success, and a considerable sum was raised. After the entertainment, which was arranged by the Women's Auxiliary of the Mayor's Relief of Distress Fund committee, their Excellencies warmly expressed their appreciation of the programme. Lord and Lady Bledisloe were met in the foyer of the theatre by Miss M. G. Havelaar, president of the auxiliary, the Mayoress (Mrs D. G. Sullivan) Mr Heathcote Helmore, and Mr Noel Roake, manager of the theatre. Miss Havelaar introduced three members of her committee, Miss B. Nurse, R.R.C., Mrs C. S. McCully, and Mrs B. Puddey. The band of the First Canterbury Regiment played the National Anthem and the overture. An excellent programme was provided, the main picture, "The Mystery of Mr X," being a tirst-class mystery drama. During the interval Miss M. Middleton played two violin solos, with Mr Albert Bidgood as accompanist. His Excellency congratulated Mr Roake at the conclusion of the entertainment, remarking that, although he did not ordinarily care for mystery films, he had thoroughly enjoyed the programme. Her Excellency said that she admired the interior decorations of the theatre, especially the sky effect.
