HARMONIC SOCIETY CONCERTS
The second subscription concerts of the Christchurch Harmonic Society will be given in the Radiant Hall on Thursday, August 30, and Saturday, September 1. The programme will be of considerable variety, but the outstanding item will no doubt be the first: performance of an entirely new work for chorus, tenor solos, and orchestra, by the young Christchurch j musician, Claude Williams, Mus. Bac. j Mr Williams has set to music the interesting poem by Mr M. O. Keane, entitled "The Blind, Obedient Dead," an his work, which has been highly praised by musical critics at Home, is very original and is bound to be exceedingly popular. Another important work to be given is Vaughan Williams's "Benedicite," an exceedingly powerful example of modern writing. The recent death of Gustav Hoist will be suitably remembered in three of his shorter works, and the balance of the choral programme will include several new part songs. The soloists will include Mr S. C. Andrews, tenor. Miss Joyce Wilkinson, soprano, and Mr Terence Vaughan, the popular young pianist. In its larger j works the choir will be supported by full orchestra, the whole under the baton of Mr Victor C. Peters. The society has had more than 130 new subscribers during the current year, and announces that subscribers may still be enrolled in time to receive tickets for the forthcoming conceits.
