AVERAGES OF THE TEAMS

BRADMAN AGAIN ON TOP VERITY'S FINE BOWLING FIGURES Although until the fourth test match Bradman had an average of only 26, his huge score of 304 places him once again at the head of the English test averages, a position he held in the 1930 series in England and the 1931-32 series in Australia. Ponsford also improved his average considerably in the fourth test and has overhauled McCabe, Australia's most consistent scorer in the present series. Leyland heads the English batting averages, with Allen, who played in only one match, second, and the consistent Sutcliffe and Walters third and fourth respectively. Verity, chosen for his bowling, has the exceptionally good average of 45.5, having only twice been dismissed in five innings. The responsibilities of leadership may be reflected in the averages of Woodfull and Wyatt, for while both have played valuable innings, their averages are only 27 and 24 respectively. O'Reilly and Grimmett, Australia's spin bowling combination, head the bowling with 24 and 17 wickets respectively and averages of 22 and 29. Verity, at the head of the English list, has the exceptionally fine record of 24 wickets at an average of 17 runs apiece. Fames and Bowes, the fast bowlers, have each taken 10 wickets, their averages being 22 and 26 respectively. The details are as follows: Australia Batting Ins. N.O. H.S. Runs. Av.
