MORE RAIN
SOUTH-WEST WIND AND COLD WEATHER Although a respite from the steady and continuous rain which began on Thursday evening was experienced for some hours yesterday morning, shortly after noon a south-w<est wind blew up, bringing with it more rain. In mostparts of the province the morning was fine, and for a period of about two hours Christchurch enjoyed calm and pleasant weather, with, bright sunshine. However, when the sky clouded over about midday, the moderate westerly wind which sprung up soon developed into a strong south-wester, and from about 1 o'clock rain began to fall all over Canterbury. The rain began in Christchurch about 2.30 yesterday afternoon, and, accompanied by a south-west wind, kept up continuously throughout . the afternoon and evening. This was general in most parts of the province, and there seemed little prospect of the weather clearing early this morning. Seventy-five points of rain wtere registered at Oxford at 9 o'clock yesterday morning, and it was reported that the rivers and creeks were running very high", after a steady downpour overnight. A line but chilly morning was experienced, but rain started at 3 o'clock in the afternoon and continued j last evening, when there was every I prospect of the bad weather continuing. Methven had a fairly heavy fall of rain up till early westerday morning, 73 points being registered at 9 o'clock. The weather had been nor'west until early in the morning, when the wind changed to the south. Rain began to fall about 2 o'clock, and continued, accompanied by a south-west wind, until last evening. Mount Somers had a good coating of snow, and there was also a good coating round the foothills. .. The wind was light from the southwest at Akaroa during yesterday morning, and heavy rain came on there, about 1 o'clock. After dark the wind increased, and there was every indication of more and heavier rain to come. At Sheffield there were showers throughout the afternoon, and about 4.30 the wind changed to nor'-west. but there were prospects of the wind changing round to the south again before the morning, the night being dull, with intermittent showers. Cheviot had similar weather to that of Christchurch, but the rain had stopped at 5 o'clock last evening, when the weather was unpromising.
