MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THURSDAY (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) REMANDED George Cross, a painter, aged 41 years, charged with obtaining £2 15s from the London and Lancashire Insurance Company, Ltd., by a false pretence, was remanded to appear on August 21. ASSAULT CHARGE Trevor Lyall Ewans, a grocer's assistant, of 160, Norwood street was charged with assaulting William George Hill, so as to cause him actual bodily harm. Chief Detective W. H. Dunlop said the complainant was the manager of a Self Help shop at the south end of the city. At C.30 p.m. on August 8 he heard his christian name called, and on going out by the back door he was struck with a prepared baton, and also with a heavy vinegar bottle. He had been considerably injured and had spent live days in hospital. Accused was remanded to appear on August 21. BOOKMAKER FINED William Thomas Coulthard, aged 30 J years, of 33 Peacock street, was charged with carrying on the business ; of a bookmaker on August 15. Chief Detective Dunlop said that ac- : cused was the proprietor of the Tau- i taki billiards room in Gloucester street. Anonymous complaints about his busi- ; ness had been received, and on August 15 Detective-Sergeant Holmes and Acting-Detective Thompson had visited ; the premises and found him carrying ■ on bookmaking. He had been quite | frank about the matter when questioned. Coulthard was fined £SO and costs. He was allowed seven days to pay. CASE ADJOURNED William Henry George Brown was charged that, being a person released on probation, he failed to comply with the terms of his release. The case was adjourned for a month and he was remanded to appear on September 20. DRUNKENNESS For drunkenness Henry Joseph Gapes was fined 20s and costs, in default of 48 hours' imprisonment.
