—_*— RAIN AND HIGH WIND WIRELESS MASTS AND TREES BLOWN DOWN (SPECLU. TO THE TRUSS.) NELSON, August 16. After a fine warm day yesterday, rain fell last night with blustering northeasterly winds which reached gale force at times. The Cawthron Institute registered .sin of rain for the 24 hours up to 9 a.m. The rainfall for the month to date is 3.22 in. The wind last night blew down several trees and wireless masts in the city, and interfered with telegraph communication to Motueka, Takaka. and Blenheim. Clouds gave way to sunshine again to-day. Sunken Scow It was reported to-day that the position of the scow, the Portland, which sank in Bark Bay, after striking a reef on Tuesday morning, is practically unchanged. The boat is lying in 30 feet of water, with the tops of her masts showing above the surface. An attempt to salvage her will be made I soon. I Obituary The death has occurred of Mr John McNabb, a highly respected resident Of Riwaka, at the age of 77 years. He wai a son of the late Mr Edward McNabb one of the early pioneers who cama to New Zealand in 1841 in the ship Indus. Mr John McNabb was born at Riwaka in 1857 and spent his earlv boyhood at Sandy Bay. He went to Christchurch with his parents and obtained work on the railway line which was under construction from Selwyn to Rakaia. Afterwards he was occupied on a railway bridge over the Rakaia river. He returned to Riwaka after an absence of four years and was employed in the erection of the first bridge built across the Motueka river, connecting Motueka with Riwaka. Mr McNabb went into partnership with his father in the building trade one of their first contracts being the old school house at Riwaka, which although built 53 years ago, is still' occupied. In 1881 he married Miss Elizabeth Askew, second daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter Askew. Three years ago they celebrated their golden wedding. For more than 50 years he successfully carried on in the buildine trade. 6 Mr McNabb was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows Loyal Good Intention Lodge, for 54 years. He leaves a widow and three sons—Mr Arthur McNabb (Nelson), MrHorace McNabb (Riwaka), and Mr Maxwell McNabb (Motueka). There are seven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Rotary Club The weekly luncheon of the Nelson Rotary Club was presided over by Rotarian President W. Armstrong. Mr H Valentine, president of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, gave an interesting talk on "Some Observation" on the Transport Problem." A vote of thanks was passed to the speaker on the motion of Rotarian E. H. Thom- ? 0 . n, „ The vis itors were Rotarian G, W. Budd (Wellington), Rotarian D. Cuthbertson (Invcrcargill), Messrs C. B. Hodgson, and P. S. Boyes (Nelson). New Zealand Alliance A-gathering of 60 delegates assembled at Rai Valley for the annual convention of the Nelson-Wairau branch of the New Zealand Alliance. Mr R Watson (Nelson) was chairman, and Mr J Malton Murray, general secretary, was present. During the year a considerable amount of educational work had been done, more especially amongst young people, said the report. The Band of Hope movement was being sustained and encouraged, and a special effort was being made to reach those who were passing from their teens to manhood and womanhood. As a licensing poll would take place whenever thf next General Election occurred, it was agreed that organisation work should now be begun. The Rev. W. A. Burley was elected president. A motion of thanks was carried to the retiring president.
