GOLF

(NOTES OF THE DAY [By "LOFTEK."! Excellent weather and improved course conditions led to capacity fields and some outstanding scores being returned on several Christchurch links on Saturday. Notable cards returned were those of G. Berry, 74 —10—64, at Avondale; T. W. Reese, 74—13—61, and R. S. Kent, 74—10—64, at Hagley; G. L. Wynyard 76, J. D. Lawrence 77, R. D. Glackin 77, at Richmond Hill, in the first qualifying round of the club championship. The inter-club match between the Christchurch and Otago Golf Clubs for the Campbell STosking and Hanmer Shields at Shirley during the week-end was notable for several interesting and closely contested games. Members of the Christchurch team combined well in the Hanmer Shield foursomes, and Otago, although stronger by nine strokes on handicap figures, was defeated by the narrow margin of two holes. Honours in the Campbell Hosking Shield, decided by singles, were equally shared, each side winning four games. For Otago B. V. Wright, K. Ross, A. G. Sime. and J. R. Laidlaw secured wins, and for Christchurch R. G. Arnould, E. J. Pumphrey, P. H. N. Freeth, and L. A. Dougall recorded solid performances respectively. Later in the afternoon Mr H. Brash, president of the Otago Golf Club, presented the shields to Sir Cyril Ward, captain of the Christchurch Golf Club. Since the commencement of the series in 1898 the Campbell Hosking Shield has been won by Christchurch seven times and by Otago eleven times. Five matches have been drawn. Christchurch has won the Harlmer Shield 11 times and Otago has recorded 15 wins. One match has been drawn. It is understood that a return match will be played towards the end of this year at Balmacewan. The council of the New Zealand Golf Association takes a benevolent interest in country golf clubs, and employs \\vp professionals who visit country clubs at intervals. Clubs which still require their service:'* are asked to make early requests in this respect, tiv.'ing to the' lateness of the sason. A returned -soldiers and sailors golf tournament is to be held at Sandringham (Royal Melbourne Golf Club) during the Melbourne Centenary celebrations next November. The tourney is "open to all men who have seen ficlix c service, being members of recognised golf clubs, who served with any belligerent nation during the Great War. professionals to be members of Professional Golf Association in their respective countries." The programme includes an 18 hole bogey competition on club handicap on November 9, for which two £SO trophies have been given. The council of the New Zealand Golf Association recently received programmes and entry forms from the ' Australian National Travel Association, and intend to circulate these to all .clubs and professionals. New Zealand entries will close on Saturday, November 3. > Miss Virginia van Wie (captain), Mrs •' Glenna Collet Vare, Mrs O. S. Hill, Mrs L. D. Cheney, Mrs Greathwaite, and Misses Maureen Orcutt, Charlotte Glutting, and L. Robinson have been selected by the United States Golf Association to represent the United States in the Curtis Cup international match against Great Britain in September. . Miss van Wie is tl)e present national golf champion of America. According to recent Australian re- "'. ports British amateur golfers visiting "'Melbourne for the centenary tourna- • ment next November will find J. Fer- • rier, the youthful New South Wales champion, a hard player to overcome. ,/-■ Provided Ferrier performs creditably ~, in the tourney he may represent Aus- .,-. tralia next year in the British open and amateur championships. Although Ferrier has had a remark- ' ably successful season, he was a few '-'" weeks ago defeated in the semi-finals ' of the Australian Club championship by D. Esplin, described as a graceful ' lefthander. Esplin was 5 down on the morning round to a score of 74, but played brilliantly after lunch to win 1 up at the thirty-sixth hole. The first qualifying round of the Christchurch Golf Club's championship will be played on Saturday, August 25. ;,,' Entries (other than comprehensive) , ..will close with' the secretary, Mr J. Donald, on Tuesday, August 21. The itinerary of the British amateur golf team to visit Australia is as follows:—October 16 v. Western Australia, - October 27, v. Queensland; November 3 and 5, Britain v. Australia, at Sydney (36 holes single, and 36 holes foursomes); November 6, v. New South . Wales; November 10 and 12, Britain v. Australia, in Melbourne; November 13, v. Victoria; November 15 to 24, Melbourne Centenary open and ama- ■■■ teur championships, at Metropolitan; November 28, v. Tasmania, at Launceston; November 1, v. Tasmania, at Hobart; December 8, v. South Australia. The British team includes the Hon. Michael Scott (captain), T. A. Bourn, L. G. Garnett, J. McLean, and D. H. Martin. Mrs Sloan Morpeth, who was recently defeated by her sister, Miss Shirley Tolhurst, in the final of the Victorian women's championship, subsequently defeated her in the final of the Metropolitan club championship, decided over 18 holes. Report states that Miss Tolhurst's remarkable accuracy with her irons and short game, shown in the state final, was not reproduced in .the club event. Over the first nine Mrs Morpeth secured bogey figures to be 5 up, and eventually won by 5 up and 4 to play. On. recent form both sisters seem likely to be selected for the Australian women's team for the forthcoming Tasman Cup match at Titirangi, in September. Answer to Timaru correspondent: Records are not made in matches, though many people will persist in describing them as such. Discussing the research work being carried out at Bingley, Yorkshire, Charles Ambrose, a well-known authority, refers to "grasses for courses." He says: "Every greenkeeper knows climatic conditions are so capricious that he must be prepared to face flood, drought, heat, and cold as they come, year in, year out. In course of time he discovers, if he is worth his salt, what grasses thrive best under his own local conditions. His district may be wet or dry, his course may run over sand or clay, by the seaside, or inland. He will have learnt that the fine hairy grasses of the seashore will survive but a short time if transplanted to heavy soil inland. Even if the seaside turfs were cut inches thick, and even if he succeeded in making them grow for a while, the local grasses would never put up with the invasion. Then again the environment is not the same, and the seaside grasses soon miss the .vea air. All these considerations tell and must be borne in mind. Pin your faith to your own local grasses. When you have found what they are study them, show them understanding, give them good drainage and fair treatment, \ and trust them to see you through drought or Hood in a way no foreigner is hkelv to do. Admittedly there are parts of the country where the natural grasses are coarse, but you must make the best of it. Nobody denies that ! some grasses are better than others, but safety is to be found in a judicious ' mixture of local grasses." George Duncan declares that a restricted pivot—without losing proper freedom-is an aid to straight shots :^! cn P'ay'.nK. th c brassic or the spoon. "The restriction of the pivot gives a rather more upright swing, thus enabling the clubhead to stay longer on

what I call the main line, that is, the line on which it is proposed to drive the ball. In driving from the tee, there is rather more margin for error, but In playing through the green, the man who pivots very far is bound to make a wild shot now and then. Therefore, I try to pivot less with my brassie than with my driver and still less, I think, with my spoon." This method Duncan maintains was the secret of Vardon's marvellous accuracy through the green. He could restrict his pivot. Answer to Alcaroa correspondent: The original handicaps should prevail in the replay. D. H. Butcher, formerly a prominent member of the Otago Golf Club, chose a good day to join the hole-in-orie brigade when at Shirley on Tuesday his tee shot at the thirteenth hole (Old Nick, 125 yards) found the cup. * LAW STUDENTS' MATCH Members of the Canterbury Law Students' Society played their first annual match at the Avondale Club's links yesterday for a cup given by the society.
